The cracks are likely due to being in a place with different humidity levels than where it was created. Drying creates stresses and these can create cracks.

As graywings suggested, I wouldn’t do anything to it since I don’t think the cracks will go anywhere, and keeping it in a cabinet will reduce cleaning.

It looks way too big to put in a cabinet. It almost reaches the height of the light switch.

I agree about the cracks...leave them unless you think they're affecting the structural integrity.

We purchased something that was shipped to us from overseas...it also cracked. We think due to the fact that the wood was green when they carved it...then the natural drying of it caused a crack.

It's probably very dusty from being out, so I would get some of that canned air, unless your husband or you have a compressor. Blow out all the nooks and crannies and then keep it dusted (or use your vacuum attachment) to keep the dust away as best you can.

I would oil it, I think (if there's no hard finish on it) just to feed the wood a bit...

I doubt that is damage that occurred in shipping. Given the size of the piece, cracking due to natural wood shrinkage is common and to be expected. Trying to somehow "fix" it will diminish the value of the carving and not look very good in my opinion. If there is anything that is in danger of breaking or falling off, then have a professional restorer take a look at it. But don't try to do something yourself.

It's wood. Over time wood will continue to dry and crack if not kept properly sealed. It is what it is.
