yes samsamyd that is a good idea. I am not to good at making a screen, I know I can purchase one I will pull the rug out for sure:)

A screen is not that hard to make - art canvas, piano hinges, and a bit of 1x3 board for the feet so doesn't tip over. Or plywood padded and covered with fabric.(memory board style)... Places like Home Goods, Cost Plus, etc ofen have them for about $99 ... but you might need to cut them down to size (shorter). .... if cutting, cut near the bottom and re-attach -- less likely to catch your eye with the joint

Cheryl, I am late to the dance, but think I can help. ...I hope. :-)
The reason you can't put your finger on what's wrong is because, while you have many pretty things in the room, there is no focal point.
Try this:
Move the filing cabinet under the clock. Center the clock between the edge of the bookshelves and the corner. Place the desk facing the window and create an "L" with those 2 pieces. Use the round rug either under the desk chair or under the desk itself. That should give you something weighty in the room to focus on.
Keep the lamp with the cabinet.
Now the chairs... Use the one slipper chair in the corner by the door and move the matching ones to another room. Or visa versa.
Now take down the box shelves and starburst mirror and rework the items on that wall. I think the square mirror from your entry/stairway? would look nice (put the starburst there). Then put the two knick knack shelves closer together grouped with the square mirror.
Also, edit the "&" symbol.
You can do this!! You are determined and I know you will make this room just as lovely as the rest of your home.

Also, switch the direction the books are stacked to match the ones on the top shelf and play with staggering the spheres for visual interest. You are a good accessorizer...just put one up high etc. play with it a bit.

I just wanted to say I did not mean you would need to start with all new furniture for this room, use what you have. I was just looking at the last set of 3 photos you had posted when I commented yesterday, 18 hours ago photos. I really like my second idea best (personally) you could use the sunburst mirror to the left of the window over the slipper chair with that option.

I would remove one chair and rug. I have had to learn less is more. Which was SUCH a struggle!

The mirror and clock are too close together and have the similar size and shape. I would also remove the mirror

About the cords, thats why I suggested just getting a new desk, it may solve the furniture placement dilemma .... I simply drilled a hole in mine and threaded the cords through. You have elegant pieces... That office I posted has an elegant style because of the formal layout that you could sorta copy... wall art on the back wall creates your focal point, but I would keep that slipper chair in the corner it was, pouf with it , maybe pulled away from the wall a bit.... cabinet and just one of the redish patterned chairs on the right wall, your lamp atop a bigger desk would be sooo lovely. Could you steal a bigger area rug from another room?

Hiya :) I've attempted three times today to catch up with this thread but failed! Lol, to summarise I love a lot
Of pieces in your room but as others have said there's a bit too much and some of it clashes... However I agree also that your room lacks a focus and a dominating feature- it's a home office/seating area.

So you have to decide - is it a home office mainly or a snug?

After all - a dining room has a table- a living room a tv- a bedroom a bed- they are all the main features. In your room
It should be your desk! But I take your points of cords etc. I think in long term a more solid desk will be useful , but I was initially going to suggest exactly the layout in bygeorgi's photo.

The desk should stand out! Place it firmly in the centre of the space, pushed back so it is level with the window... The computer should be towards the window side but with it's back facing it- this is to avoid glare when working. A light source should be ideally from side, not behind or in front of screen.

Secondly with the desk in this position you can see out the window.

That would be a beautiful space to work.

However the wall behind it is the main problem. Your shelves are quirky but dominate the room with its angles. I know you can't love them yet, but in future the ideal place might be on opposite wall- left of the door as you come in. That's also where the big chair, the rug and ottoman should be.

The other two chairs if they can't be moved elsewhere, have you thought about recovering them? Then place them either side on the back wall... This wall eventually needs some symmetry / centreing to give you the impact you want

Finally why not try placing the desk in the position I'm suggesting and then the dresser in front of it- with the drawers facing the door.

This would temporarily give you the effect of a big wooden desk- and at same time hide the cords.

Once you've seen that it may help to envisage what the room could look like over time and whether that arrangement works for you before you spend more money :)

Of course you could also place the table the other way round in meantime

saya85 such good ideas ..Ido believe a new desk is in order, just not in the budget yet..Soo I wil use what I have and take your sugestions and play a little..I never thught of the desk the way it is in this pic.. but going to try it as it will hide the cords and monitor...also the dresser up to the desk may also work,, i will try both ways

Unfortunatly I promied my daughter to spend the day out.. but mom wants to play inside moving furniture:)) but I must give her some mommy time(she's 16 there won't b too many more). so that means I prob won't get to really move things until Monday ( weekend hubby home, I like to work alone, he cramps my style:) but I will post and see what everyone thinks...It's killing me to not be able to get right to it:(

Cheryl- they way I wrote and told you to put your desk is just like bamamom shows in the bottom sketch of hers. Thanks bamamom for making the diagram:) we are in sync! That way you face the door and can see whats coming. You can also look out the window. I think the cabinet belongs under the clock though. You might have to lower the clock but first things first That is getting the desk in the right location. Try it!

Cheryl. Give the desk by window a shot. I didn't think I was explaining very clearly and a visual, however crude; always helps me. I know my proportions are off, but yes I was trying to get the cabinet under the clock. Hope you had fun today. So true our children grow up to quickly.

Any chance your daughter would "play" in your room tomorrow with you????? A little mother daughter room arranging time? Has she shown an interest or do you think she is waiting for an invitation? It could be fun! I know I love these times with my daughter....she is older than your daughter and has her own home and family, but we still do it when we get together and I swear there are times I cannot do a thing without asking her!!!

Def looks better than when you first started :) everything's in a more logical place and holds its own ground.

I would probably still say cut down on some of the decorative items as there are lots of them and they are small so competing visually.

The larger times like mirror and clock and lamp work better.

I stil prefer the idea of a big central desk but I think when your budget allows you will move to that design in time :)

I'm wondering whether putting the rug back under the slipper chairs or under the big chair would work?

P.s watch to see if you get headaches/ glare with the desk and screen in that position with window/mirror

P.s.s if ur selling the sunburst mirror I know someone who will have it! Lol

So much better but I would still remove the vase from the table and the two pieces next to the mirror. Enjoy the space.

I don't know why you're so bothered about the monitor- it looks sleek and clean- no excess wires that I can see... If ur really annoyed by it- you could add a sort of plinth/shelf to back of desk to disguise it

--glare out the window? Aim the blinds down! I use my goose neck lamp when it gets dark. Your view is lovely. If you dislike your desk and are on a budget--look in a seond hand store for a nice table/desk. They have tons of them. Good job anyway.

Woohoo!!!! Great job Cheryl!!!! Love it. Another option if there should be glare, turn the desk slightly toward the door....actually just straight toward the slipper chair., That way your not looking directly into the window, you would need to turn slightly right to look outside.

Just got back from our long weekend away and could not wait to see what you had done in this room! You have been busy! I am sooo anxious for you to sit and relax in your office and check all your emails with your new desk location. I LOVE it right there and you HAVE to have it there with that view right outside. I have to say the files work right there, too and are sooooo handy! Also loving the nesting tables in there between the chairs and they work right there, too. IF IF IF I were to have one suggestion it would be to either put the rug back with that nice comfy chair OR go to Target and check out your options for a cheap larger one. Something tells me you will not relax until you do and maybe just get one to see IF that is a missing link with the option of taking it back once you can step back and take a look. I do love your floors, though, but that rug just seemed to belong with that chair. Have the best day ever!

yes abbyjean i would like the rug also.... I plan on looking after work for a bigger one if I do get one the round one will have to go as they wont work together...which means the chair will prob not be on it though as I dont want the new rug to cover the whole floor, it's too pretty...
