Laundry room layout dilemma

Hi Houzz people,

We are in the final stretch of our house build and I am working on my laundry room plans. The plumbing and duct work are all done and I just need to finalize cabinet layout.

Here is my requirement for laundry room: space to sort, wash, soak, fold, dry delicates and iron. It also needs to store detergents, beach towels, guest sheets and towels, lightbulbs, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies for upstairs (excl. mop and vacuum)

My washing and soaking side of laundry room is done. So it’s all about sorting, folding, drying and storing. I have so far came up with 2 options:

Option 1 - against the wall allows for about 40” of folding space and I can keep ironing board always unfolded (we iron a lot in this house)

Option 2 - against the window allows for about 52” of folding space but no space to keep ironing board out all the time.

Which option do you prefer?

against window - allows 52” of folding space and ironing board will need to be folded when not in use

against the wall allows 40” of folding space plus space for ironing board

What about a wall mounted ironing board?

(P.s. I gave up ironing years ago.)

I would absolutely hate to mess with the ironing board constantly, so I'd let it sit out in this room. You can always fold an item on top of the ironing board, if it got that necessary.

Here is another option. This could work as well, I think. It will give me about 30” of height to dry delicates and I can store things that we don’t use often on top (i.e., guest sheets and towels, beach towels, lightbulbs) and it will give me a lot of space to fold and a place to put a basket. Ironing board can stay out or can be folded away if necessary.

Do you iron a few things every day or do you iron everything once a week?

Get a recessed ironing station cabinet.

To cut down on precious time get a hanging rod to quickly hang items out of dryer to do less ironing ;)

I personally do not like stacked washer dryer because it is hard on the back lifting wet clothes into it on a regular basis. Plus, grabbing the dry load takes more grabs to get it all out due to being harder to reach up into. The only time I suggest this for clients is when thrre's not enough room for a side by side washer/dryer.

If possible, also try recessing a shallow storage closet for cleaners.

Also waste bin pullouts can be used for sorting laundry

If you are folding in this space, max that and get portable ironing surface for same spot. What are you ironing?

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately given that plumbing and ducting is done, the washing side stays as is.

I think I am going to max out folding area - 5’ and definitely will install a rod to minimize ironing. We iron about once a week - work clothes mostly but I would love to iron a bit everyday to not accumulate my iron load. I am switching to steaming more and more though.

I like the idea of laundry sorter on wheels and with board on top. This way I can roll it to the washer/dryer and use the top part of it as a mid way stop when loading and unloading laundry.

Do you guys think set up looks better against the wall or against the window (if we get wall mounted ironing board)?

In regards to placement of iron, choose the most functional, comfortable spot. To help choose, actually go through the motions of ironing in the spaces considering. You'll then know which works better for you. Function & comfort then looks.
