What kind of stuff do you need to store is always the first step.Also where is it in the house that will also be a factor.

The possibilities (and possible suggestions) are virtually endless. I might use it for hanging down sleeping bags, or mounting ski racks on the walls, or for suitcases, or holiday decorations, or power tools. I have a gun safe in a bedroom closet.

Look at all your existing storage space - closets, garage, basement. Is your clothes closet stuffed with current and out of season clothes? Is your kid's room overflowing with toys they no longer use (but you want to save for a younger child)?

The storage needs, whether it be clothes, sports equipment, or whatever, will determine whether you need a clothes rod, adjustable shelves, or wall racks.

If it backs onto another room, the closet could be in that room.
