... looking again I think your art is so bright/ saturated that it might be overtaking and detracting from the curtains does it seem so? I think one or the other.

This room is trying to decide what it wants to be when it grows up. The bookcase will hide the highwater drapes.

Post pics of the whole space IMO not every ich of space needs filling and IMO that bookcase looks silly there right after it goes in you will want to know what to do with the bookcase that sits partway under your window. IMO a chair there will be out of the conversation loop but maybe try one there from the DR to gat a feel for it.

There is so much going on my eye can't land on any one area or quietly scan.
paint all areas a quiet color that works with the warm carpet color. Some of the warm whites or warm grey would work
Get a killer entry light
A small swivel chair with reading light would be a cozy possibility.
hang windows closer to the ceiling and have enough fabric that would cover windows - with some folds - even if you don't close.
Hard to tell, but the area rug over the carpet - is it defining a space or just carrying out a trend?

Do you have small children? I wouldn’t place anything that your child can climb onto, ie: chair, bench, shelving; and maybe fall over the banister. How about a nice loose leafed plant? A palm or something like that placed in a soft, thinking jute, container.

I would seriously consider replacing the iron railing in that corner with a solid, drywalled half-wall (same height), and paint it, the entranceway walls and the living room walls all one colour. I think that would reduce some of the visual clutter and give the area a more cohesive, calm appearance. Then I would probably just put a really nice, comfortable chair there.
