I know they like the insides of the avocado but I stopped putting them in my bins because the outside shell seems to get very hard and very slow to breakdown. Do you find that to be the case in your bins?

IM going to leave these shells in the bin. I have two in this bin one is soft the other hard. There are no worms under the hard one as yet.

I've got like 10 avocados from a Vietnamese restaurant. The restaurant couldn't use them because they wouldn't ripen to be used for the avocado drinks. Unlike with ripe avocados, it took a while until the worms/mites started to work on them. I only gave 1/2 at a time in each corner. Once the avocados were worked on, the mites weren't that bad but the pot worms. Man oh man, I can remove balls of pot-worms. I also sprinkle powdered egg-shell.

The thinner shells breaks down OK but somehow there are avocados with thick shells and these took a long time to break down. If it took too long, I removed them.

Harry, if you put the thick shells in the bin, the worms can clean out any avocado meat left in there. If you put it on top, it will be easy to find and throw out. They cleaned it out real well.

I have found a new source for worm food. The super market near my house sells mixed fruit (cut up) in plastic take out containers prepared behind the counter. If I come around 3.30 PM they'll have lots of melon rinds, cantaloupe etc. in the (clean & not smelly) garbage container nearby and they let me take it. So once a week I take like 2 or 3 shopping bags full. I think my worms have never been so happy.
