changing countertop

I am really doing too many things at one time. I am planning to change my kitchen countertop from baltic brown granite to Quartz. We have done a partial remodel and this will be the last part of it. We have stained the cabinets added glass inserts under cabinet light some organizers new appliances and backsplash. I am trying to decide on the quartz. My floor is medium stained and cabinet is dark. We want to go with white quartz. We are also extending the island by adding open shelving. Please advise. Am I making a costly mistake? any other quartz you would suggest.

I put quartz in my older kitchen and am very happy. My cabinets were in good, sound shape and my layout was good. Those factors helped me decide to go ahead with the change. Because you chose a backsplash with lots of movement, keep the counters very calm. Keep those samples up and look at them in different lighting and at different times of the day. The best one will show itself because it will work and look right every time you walk by it. They all look potentially good, but all your pics show everything up close - you need to look at the whole space, and as I mentioned, in different lighting.

    This is mine:

with that busy b/s, i would keep the counter as simple as possible. good advice above ^^

The backsplash will most likely be damaged by the removal of the stone. It goes in after the counters. No one will ever remove those counters and guarantee that you can keep your backsplash.

But that's a good thing here. That splash is much too busy to go with any of those counters. So rip it out too, and do whichever of the stones that you like the best. Then you can put in a simpler coordinating backsplash that relies on shape or texture. Not those little sticks that are way to busy for anything.

thanks a lot. I am trying to choose the calmest one and I am aware about the backsplash. Please suggest actual name of Quartz that you will recommend with this set up. I am doing the same quartz in adjoining bar area as well.

Pick a plain white. No pattern at all. White Zeus Extreme Silestone for instance. Or Designer White Corian.

You are going to need to repair that splash. It will get damaged. So you might as well take advantage of that to get the marble look counter that you obviously want. Then do a different backsplash that goes with the marble look. Because none of those counters go with that splash. And the splash is the one to vote off of the island.

The OP said the backsplash was part of the remodel. Perhaps at the time they installed it they weren’t aware that it would be damaged with the completion of the remodel.

yes, it will get damaged but it's not significant if the demo person is cautious. we hammered out concrete counters and had to replace 2 rows of 1" tiles of the backsplash and that was mostly because the new granite wasn't as thick as the concrete. It can be done if you have extra tile.

that sounds reassuring. The fabricator said he will be able to remove without damage my bar area has black marble tiles attached he told me the paint will need to be retouched. The backsplash in real life blends into the wall similar grey green and you only see the metal specks. I think it will be fine w white quartz. However there are warm and cold whites. I am having a hard time deciding. So far I have only got samples from MSI. Can anyone who has experience with MSI tiles please advise a suitable white.

I am finally decided to go with Carrara Moro quartz from MSI.

it looks like this. One more question is that I am extending my island countertop by 12 inches on one side. It will be a overhang. on the perpendicular long side it has a overhang of 11 . I want to extend it by 1 inch. total size of island will be 70 inches by 38. I wanted to add an open bookcase on one side ( 38). MY GC is saying that I shd just add support bracket 4 of them and be done. Is that a good idea.
