Contractor Theft

Hi - we are in the middle of getting our house ready for sale and had painters in to do a quick two day touch up job. The day after they left, I find three empty bottles of beer hidden behind the dryer in the basement laundry room. I check the basement refrigerator and yep, three bottles are missing from a full four pack. I also notice that an item of sentimental value that was in the room next door to where the work was done is also missing. There were two cleaning ladies in the house for a few hours on one of the days the painters were here but they did not go upstairs, we all stayed in the kitchen working on a project together. While one of them did go to the basement a few times, she is smaller than me and would have been a bit tipsy if she had downed three stout beers in a short time. I am fairly certain the beer theft and missing item are attributable to the painting contractor.

How to confront this guy? He claims his guys have worked with him for years and the owner seemed very responsible and has been in business in town for over 20 years. You can't have employees who steal from clients and stay in business. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Should I discuss with him or just post something online? I feel violated and that I can't trust anyone. The item missing was sentimental, belonging to my mother who recently passed. The contractor also asked that I give him a review online. Not going to happen.
