I would do black. It will look great with the white dove walls.

He wants to paint just says he doesn’t like my suggestions. . I think he’d like some color, since I painted everything white. I was ready for a clean fresh start. The black is striking!

Solid color paint, looks to me plastic like. Have you thought about a paint wash?

dark gray is another option.

lighter gray with a thicker wood mantel.

paint doesn't have to look 'plastic-like' unless you use a glossy paint meant for drywall.

you can use a milk paint (a real milk paint) or a chalk paint. that will give it more of a worn type of look. more modern look? then use a matte black masonry paint or something like Romabio.

My vote is black. And I would get rid of the insert. It's very dated looking.

I’m going to paint the insert, but replacing is not at option st this time.

I think that your current fireplace color looks great with your floor. I would be afraid that black/gray will bring the room down. Add your furnishings and accessories to the mix and see what you think. You can always paint later if needed.
