There are many varieties which trail. So anything with wave, cascade, or trail in the name will work! They need to be watered quite a bit, especially in containers and if you really want to keep the blooms going, deadheading is essential with petunias.

Here's a link to a seed site, but it'll give you specifics on water, light, sizes, etc. so you'll have a better idea what to expect.

As far as pots, the bigger the better. Are you talking about free-standing pots or pots that are hanging from the balcony railing like this?

Plastic pots like this take a LOT of water, especially since you said you've got lots of sun. A 12" diameter pot filled with growing, healthy petunias like this in the hot sun all day, hanging in the air, will need watering (till the water runs out the bottom) every day. Most likely more than once a day. I love gardening and flowers, but frankly, that's too needy for me.

A larger pot, sitting on the floor with similar petunias, won't need quite that much watering.
