which color border for this runner?

I’m having an indoor/outdoor runner made for the area in front of my kitchen sink. Cabinets are white, quartz counters, white oak flooring. I’m not sure if I should go the high contrast route with grey, or be safe and go with “wheat”. Samples are shown below with a piece from my Roman shade which hangs above sink.

This isn't a permanent item. It's just a runner. Get whatever you like. It's not as though it's expensive and a real commitment.

Wheat for me. The gray looks pretty dark on my monitor.

If you like organic and want it to blend into your floors get the wheat color but if you're looking for a fresh and clean look get the grey like you're blind. It's a nice balance either way

Yes, the grey is on the dark side- I do like the contrast but wish they offered a more medium grey.
    I agree

The gray would be nice if it's actually lighter and similar to the gray in your Roman shade. Seems that would all look good with stainless appliances, too...if you have them.

Are you sure you don't want something with a pattern?

That looks awfully unforgiving of kitchen stains...

it is a nice grey though

I'd go with wheat. Monochrome gets tiring to the eyes.

    Just my thoughts here.

I do have stainless appliances. The rug is polypropylene- I chose this material because I could hose it off.

    Then there’s this sample
Artemis, wheat would be monochrome- did you mean grey?

You're having one made? because you want a certain size? Houzz has a slew of these rugs w/diff color borders.

btw, do you stand at you sink (or work in the kitchen) barefoot? If so, you may want to rethink that rug material. Does not feel good on bare feet.

Beth, I can’t seem to find a runner I like only 5” long, 2.5’ wide. It’ll cost me roughly $180 to have made. If you can find better on Houzz- please share!

    5" long?? or 5'? can you do a 3x5?

    Feet
No, 3 feet is too wide
I could fit it, but prefer a runner look, not a little area rug. Which would you suggest Beth- grey or wheat?

    Second sample with the wheat...!

    Pretty fabric for the shade

A friend of mine has a natural fiber seagrass runner with the fabric border in her kitchen (from Ballard). For spills, she takes it outside to hose off and dry which has worked great...and easier in dry weather.

Beth, the thing is I don’t want cotton- I ‘ve found plenty I liked, but prefer something that looks like a sisal but wears well- as in the polypropylene, which btw is rather soft underfoot- the price also includes an attached cushiony latex backing.

Thanks Ilovered; I’m in love with this fabric- it makes such a cute shade- I had it custom made for only $65 from an Etsy shop!

Although Beth, the Chatham wool would probably wear well but think the white would get dingy fast
  • 7 years ago

ah, ok. then perhaps it's worth the extra money to get exactly what you want. I like the darker border.

You may want to rethink a latex backing on hardwood floors. Lots of threads about different types of rubber/foam backing and rug pads leaving stains on hardwood. I'm not sure about latex, but I avoid them all on my hardwoods.

It also will affect how long it would take to dry if you hose it off.

I’ve never had an issue with rug pads or rubber backed throw rugs on my floors. My kitchen floors are 15 yrs old so pretty well cured.

Pensivern: grey would be monochrome. Wheat at least brings in some other tones.

The rug is primarily wheat tones already- grey trim would contrast it. Wheat trim on the wheat rug is monochromatic no?

Since you shared your window treatment, I'd go with the gray!

I like the grey. I think it will be very nice

65 bucks! What a bargain. And gorgeous.

Love the window shade! Would you mind sharing your Etsy vendor’s shop name - I’m interested in something similar for my new house!

Gray. No doubt . Would love to know the Etsy source.

Sew lovely by Kelly.... she has an Etsy shop as well as website.

I had a change of heart- found this striated pewter one and liked the coordination with my shade as well as contrast it has with my lighter oak floors- medium gray canvas will border.

Be careful with latex (rubber) backings. It discolors almost all floors but ceramic tile. There are a few coming out with vinyl backings now which is more floor friendly. Or make sure you get a non rubber pad for under your runner.

As I wrote up above- I never had a problem with rubber/ latex backings on my wood floors
  • 7 years ago

I have read about the problem with rug backings and wood floors. Like pensivern, I've never had a problem.

I have this rug in the wheat color for my hallway leading to my garage. It’s an outdoor rug, polypropylene so can be hosed off - exact same as what you’re looking for. It’s 7’ x 2.5’ so a tad longer than what you want. And it doesn’t have a border. It has the banding around it in the same wheat color but not a ‘border’ on the face of the rug itself as part of the design.

Beth makes a good point though, it’s not soft on the feet. For me, this doesn’t matter considering it’s specifically for catching dirt and wiping feet when coming in from outside, but it may matter to you since it would be going in the kitchen. Something to think about.

Anyhow, I got it on sale at Target last summer. $40 I think. I believe they have similar ones on their website in a couple different color options.
