Shower Grout cracking

After removing cracking grout at different locations where the planes changes in the shower stall, I noticed some uneven tile lines. The gaps range from 3/16 to 5/16. How should I go about this, should I just fill in the gap with silicone or should I put in some type of backer rod first before the caulk?

The backer rod is for depth, if the opening is deep enough you can put a backer rod so you don't waste a ton of silicone. If the opening is not deep enough, just fill it with caulk.

The depth is some spots is a little less that 3/4.

A minimum of 1/4" sealant substrate bond is necessary to ensure adequate

adhesion. you can use a 3/8" backer rod in places where you have depth of 5/8" or more.

If this is where the planes change, I think there needs to be caulk there and not grout.
