Chaste Trees are pretty small and have lovely blue/purple flowers in the Summer. It's deciduous. Here's a photo of mine when it was about 1 year old.

Check out Drake Elm. Depending on your zone, thaey may or may not drop leaves

in winter. Lovely, graceful, small tree and used by many cities in their streetscape.

Thanks! I will check it out. My neighbors had a huge oak that reached over just enough to give perfect shade where I needed it. Actually I kind of designed the bed for afternoon shade because of the oak. They lost it during Irma and my garden really struggled last year.

I would love a dogwood. But I am under the impression that they need some shade?

Dogwoods can grow in shade, but in SC, where I'm from, they are often in full-sun as the main tree in the front yard. They are susceptible to anthracnose, but there is a systemic fungicide that applied once a year will keep that away.

Redbuds, on the other hand, are beautiful when they bloom and grow quickly. Keep them lightly trimmed to thicken up the canopy to get more shade, or you'll get dappled shade.

In the meantime, I use pigeon pea where I need fast shade. they grow quickly from seed, and you get shade and then peas to eat. They're short lived perennials, live about 3-5 years or until a freeze kills them. I have some seeds, if you'd like ot try them. They have beautiful flowers that bees love.

If you like Mulberries, the dwarf black mulberry gets around 12-15 feet here. The fruit is delicious similar to blackberries to my taste. I have 1000s of fruit this year just starting to ripen. Im so happy :)
