it's a pretty door, painting would help your entry to show up but not sure how much because it is so recessed . you would have to do a pretty light color or a very strong pop.

Is there a porch light or over head light?

as a side note, I probably would have painted the garage door the base color and the pillars white, that would define the space a little better, right now all you see is a big white door.

Landscaping will really help bring this project to life as well.

Yes, I live in a tropical zone....The Bahamas.

I don't know about the upkeep. Ask a carpenter or someone at a good hardware store. There are so many different kinds of wood conditioners and finishes. Good luck!
