Blooming is a major investment for the plant. It saves energy for quite a while for the bloom - and afterwards rests and recuperates. Some heavy blooming plant s can even lose the crown. So - I am sure the observation you made shows the plant getting stressed by holding the huge bouquet up.

I would think that the watering needs increase for the period of blooming. You can try the wicking method - or just add a bit to your regular routine. As you said - it is better to be cautious with watering. We have a magic testing tool - our index finger. If you touch the soil - and it gets dry faster then usual - water it one day earlier...
