Kitchen Facelift Needed! What would you do?

Hubby and I want to update our kitchen for obvious reasons. Just bought this house and will be our “forever” home :)

The wall paint color and SS appliances must stay. Is the layout ok? We want to avoid doing any major rearranging here....

Thoughts are to of replace cabinets with a darker color cabs (expresso maybe) and adding hardware. Trying to avoid kitchen looking too dark, so would the lights I have now work?

Thinking of adding white quartz counters and not sure in backsplash yet. Floors have to go as well. Thinking of a light gray rectangular tile.
Would this look be doable? Will kitchen still feel open and fresh not closed in and dark?
Thank you in advanced!!!

Inspiration photo and floor tile I’m considering

It's not a bad layout, though I'd want to change the island format and move the microwave. Is there a walk in pantry? What is the flooring like in the rest of the house? I'm not a fan of any form of espresso unless I can drink it, so I'm no help there I'm afraid.

Glad your inspiration doesn't have an OTR micro. But the frig needs some 6-9" space on the left so the door can open. You can get new led 100w equivalent 14w Feit A19 regular format bulbs from Costco for your recessed cans. 1500 lumens per light. Changing your lowers to all drawers will make storage more functional.

@jslazart, expresso in drinking format I like too as well, too much I think that I want them on my cabs!

Regarding island format, you suggest rotating it and placing it length wise? That’s funny bc hubby suggested adding a peninsula but downsizing on the island. I like your idea much better though.

I don’t like the microwave above the range either...where would you suggest I put it? I’m liking the look of microwaves placed lower and tucked in a lower cabinet. Don’t know the correct term but I think you get what I mean. Where would be the ideal place to put it?

Pantry is a walk in pantry and oh how do I love it! It has has the same ugly white tile in there too as well as the dining area. Living Room has a rich color wood laminate, not sure on exact wood color. I’ve included an image. Thanks for your feedback!

I am not a fan of the ref right against the wall - always seems to be a problem. I would put a small broom closet in there or pullout pantry. Take the cabinets to the ceiling. Do a pretty hood and vent it outside and completely reconfigure that island - seating on 2 sides , some decorative legs, make it more rectangular than square...

    That would be a start!

@dan1888, thanks for your feedback! I’ll have Hubby check into the lighting for me.

As far as fridge door clearance of 6-9”,what can be done here? The door to laundry room is immediately to the left of the fridge door. It is a bit bothersome when freezer door is open and there is ppl traffic going in and out of kitchen, but don’t see that happening quite often. Would fridge need to move?

Drawers for lower cabs is something I had in mind and loving the idea, more so if I were to reconfigure the island as mentioned before.

What about the floor color? I want to try and keep them light bc there will be so much dark going on with LR floors and dark cabinets. Your honest thoughts?

    @Debbie, thanks for your advice!

I knew something was off with the island...seating on 2 sides you say? So if I were to reconfigure the island length wise, seating would be on the longest side and possibly on the short sude near pantry? If so I like the idea.

So the fridge... I may need to get rid of some counter space if I were to scoot the fridge more toward my right. Correct? Fridge won’t be too close to range??

Fridge needs to move some to the left if keeping it there. Either a wider filler against the wall.

Maybe can adjust the interior wall that has nothing on it & recess fridge into wall.

For the fridge, would it be possible to put it next to the large window at the right of the sink. You could put the microwave built in at the left of the oven., may be.

Not sure I would turn the island 90 %. It seems that this would give you a much smaller island.

If you post a layout with exact(ish) dimensions, you'll get more detailed help. If the left side of the kitchen is a traffic path, the fridge might be better on the other perimeter wall. Then you'd also have fridge-sink-range, and might even be able to center the range on the wall if that appeals to you aesthetically. But dimensions matter.

I don't think i'd do wood look tile next to wood look laminate, but other people are much better at floors than I am!

@artistsharonva, ok now I see what you mean with the fridge. Shoving the fridge a bit over closer to the range could work, but also like the idea of moving it to the other wall where sink is like someone else mentioned here.

I would have to talk to hubby about this and possibly getting a kitchen designer bc this is more than I thought I would’ve done I’m glad I asked!
@jslazart, thanks for the insight on moving the fridge over to the other wall. I’m pretty sure it can happen but then there will be too much going on with the sink, dish washer and then the fridge no?

I like the wood tile look, or maybe I just like the shape and color?? It didn’t convince me when I placed the tile next to the laminate. Looked a bit funky. I’ll reconsider, but I do want a light color flooring and long shape...

I’ll post dimensions as soon as I can. We haven moved in yet and I’m 2 hrs away from our new home!

@Debbi, ohhh those are nice islands with great seating! I do have quite a bit of space to work with. The island is about 6 x 4 and there is still quite some room in between the island to the dining table.
I’ll load up a sketch with dimensions soon!

I do understand why it would be easy to move the ref to the sink wall but I feel like it is a huge visual block... you will have to stand in the space and see how you feel about that. If the room is wide enough, it may be fine...

That is a wide island. Do you like having such a wide island?

If redoing floor or there's tile under island, maybe making it less wide would open up more possibilities. By doing this you may be able to add something on the wall where nothing is currently. Depending on the overall dimensions.

Do you want a prep island with no seating?

IF seating how many if you could choose? Which direction would you want people to sit in & near kitchen?

Here's some general guidelines to keep in mind.

Last photo minimum 12". I suggest at least as wide for a cookie sheet to have space to land it hot out of the oven

    There's a lot of space & potential.

You must be excited. Definitely adjust the fridge from being too close to the wall on left.

    Hey Hi/ Hola,

The lay out looks pretty good! I would recommend squaring off your island, having an island with a rounded end tends to date the look of a kitchen. If you are still on the hunt for hardware you should check out Century Hardware! I would recommend Century's Modern Geo, or Metro collection. It's recommended to stick to a Stainless or Satin Nickel finish so as not to clash with your appliances. Best wishes!

    I’m baaaack Houzzers!

So after much research, we have finally decided to have our cabinets custom made on site. It sure helps when Hubby knows a trusted friend in the carpentry business! Im so grateful.

Cabinets will extend to the top and are being stained in espresso. I’m loving how they are turning out!!!

I have a question though, should I keep the inside of the cabinets natural or stained too? My thinking is that they will look too dark if stained inside and out. What do ya’ll think??
FYI: 3 standing cabinets are stained with one coat. Solo cabinet stained with 2 coats.

Vote for keeping them natural. I haven't the faintest idea if that's what is normally done. I just like it visually. They look very nice so far!

Progress! Slow progress but progress nevertheless. It’s countertop time! Hubby and I have been eyeing Taj Mahal quartzite, it’s beautiful and calming. Plus we think it won’t be too much of a color contrast with the dark cabinets. Thoughts on backsplash? Keep it simple maybe?

    Looking good so far.

1 suggestion, get glass shelving in glass cabinets when possible.

If you put lighting in the cabinets the light will go through the glass & light up the whole cabinet nicely.

Ok!!! So we finally have Taj Mahal counters installed and have chosen MSI Grecian White marble floors. Now, what should I do with the backsplash?
Here’s a pic of cabinet with a tile of the Grecian sitting on top of current tile.
I selected a simple white subway but this white is tooooo bright white. Thoughts?
Maybe an ivory subway or a light grey to match the grey veining on floor? PLEASE HELP!
