Usually small citrus will drop most of the fruit by themselves.

I agree, as a general rule feed it and let citrus take care of itself, this means no thinning, no pruning, and removing the support stake as soon as possibly. With grafted citrus you do need to keep an eye out for root stock shoots growing from below the graft and remove them as they show up. All of those rules for deciduous fruit (stone fruit, etc.) does not apply to citrus. Young citrus may have some long lanky growth, but will tend to sort itself out over time, citrus needs to bend in the wind to gain strength and is far more flexible than other types of fruit trees so there is little concern of wood splitting in a healthy citrus tree. About the only time you should prune is if a limb is touching the ground. Citrus forms a closed canopy, you DO NOT want an open airy tree structure in citrus like you would want in stone fruit.

Thank you, Ike! I'll follow your advice. Actually I didn't know citrus trees should have a closed canopy. I ended up doing an open-center pruning on one of my trees last season. :/

My grafted trees benefit from thinning. Avoiding... or rather failing to do so has caused large branches full of fruit to break and split from the trunk. Grafted trees do not know how big and strong they are... or are not.

For trees that i want faster size growth, i will attempt to limit them to 3 fruits.
