I notice though that yours aren't showing any red above ground in the first photo. I'm going to be outside tomorrow and I'll take a photo. Definitely I have the roots underground, but they are at the very tip of the seedlings. Thanks.

That's because the first photo is Pumba a yellow granex type. If the roots are deep enough to take hold you are home free. If not just gently push them a bit deeper.. If the bulb is covered they think they are leeks. This photo is the young transplant of Rio Rojo (The red one)

I usually plant them about 3/4 of an inch- no deeper than 1". Like farmerdill says- you just need to get the roots covered for bulbing onions.

Instead of disturbing their roots, I’d add some soil or compost on top.

Okay - thanks so much for the help. Yes, if the first photo was a yellow onion, then I understand. [g] I probably did plant them deep enough then. I'm sure it was at least 3/4" deep. Although I did two patches in different beds and the first patch I might have done a little more shallow. That's a good idea, to just add some soil or compost on top of them. I could just add a slight layer more to that first patch at least.

Here's a photo of my small onion patch....I planted about 40, half here and half in another bed.

I plant a little deeper and get great results. As the bulbs develop, they will push more and more above the ground.
