help with rugs for kitchen

I want to get a rug for my wood kitchen floor and would like suggestions for where to search. I love orientals, but would like the look in an easier to clean rug. Any suggestions for brands or types and where to look?

Just make sure whatever you put down is washable, and compatible with wood floors (ie no rubber backing).

By rubber backing, are you meaning actually rubber or anything like latex, etc.? Also, this is a newly uncovered, refinished wood floor that goes down stairs to a back door where I was going to use a waterhog mat with some kind of latex backing which did discolor the previous white vinyl.

Check out the Ruggable line. I love them, I‘be actually washed them and they come out perfect. They’re not plush but they do the job.

Can you put some type of backing on cotton or jute so it doesn't slip? Is that OK with wood?

Just curious, not trying to be challenging, but why do you even need a rug in the kitchen? Especially on pretty wood floors? The wood floors are decoration enough. To me, it will be one more cleaning chore, because the rug will get drips and stains on it, just like the kitchen floor does, but the floor is an easy wipe. I'd let your creativity focus on rugs for the rest of your home and leave the rug out of the kitchen.

You know, a wool Oriental rug is NOT a chore to clean; in fact, my Persians have been horked on repeatedly by cats over the years, and every bit of it wiped right up without a trace of evidence left behind. I would not hesitate to put one in the kitchen; in fact, I have a runner there now but if I had the funds to do it, I'd splurge on a vintage wool one for that space instead. There's a reason those rugs are around for centuries. They simply aren't "fragile" as some people seem to believe.

Did the refinishers give you instructions? I know mine told me not to put any type of rug for quite awhile. I have no rugs in the kitchen, can’t see any need, but if you want ine, check with whoever refinished your floor

I vote vintage Oriental but if you want something new check out resale rugs. They have free shipping and free returns which is nice.

The poster who asked why a rug, it adds color and interest to the floor as well as water protection at the sink.

I’m not sure about what type of pad to use. I’d make sure the floors are cured enough to put anything done. I’ve seen posts before where the person had indents in their floor from pads. Hopefully someone here can give more info but I’d do some googling.

Thanks, jmm1837: I wasn't aware of the issue with petroleum based, latex, etc. backed rugs, but glad to kn ow before I ruined my floors. I will research that issue.

Karen Rose: I've never seen Ruggables; they are interesting and being able to wash would certainly be a real plus!

beckington: Yes, I'm sure I could use the same kind of mat I use under a wool rug on hardwood.

Shannon_WI: I just want the warmth that a rug adds and I don't have much wall space or other area except window treatment and floor to add some color and texture. Small kitchen.

IdaClaire: When all is said and done, I will probably end up with an oriental as I really do love them and have had them in kitchens before. I just thought there might be something new that I should consider.

Sue Mcgrath: No, they didn't tell me anything, but they probably thought I knew how to care for them as the rest of my house is hardwood. I can certainly give them a call.

Sheeisback GW: Another oriental lover! I love them, too. I will check out resale rugs-hadn't heard of them.

Thanks for everyones input. It's a big help in making decisions
