interior design suggestions!

My husband and I just moved into our first home. The downstairs is an open floor plan, walls are Behr’s Flannel Gray, hardwood floors are a gray-brown color, white trim. The kitchen has two blue walls, white cabinet and blue backsplash.

The flannel gray seems to have a blue tint and I’m having a hard time figuring out what color furniture and rugs I want. We’ve purchased a navy blue couch and acacia wood table with beige dining chairs with walnut legs. These things can’t be returned. But the dining room rug is currently in question for return.

I’m wondering people’s thoughts on this dining room rug (I feel like the dining area color combo doesn’t compliment the blue/white/gray in the rest of the downstairs), as well as any suggestions for a different rug. Also trying to decide upon a coffee table and a few other pieces of living room storage furniture.

Please add lighting to your room, floor lamps or table lamps and please, please add some color and pattern via your rugs or drapes and of course artwork that is personal to you.

IMO the rug in the DR is too blah and you need something with some navy in it to bring the two spaces together.. I hope that TV is mounted on a piece that allows it to come down further when watching it . You need lighting and IMO LEDs with 3500-5000K range to keep the colors looking the same at night as they do in the daytime. I would push that sectional back as far as possible since the LR seems smaller than the DR it looks off balance. Of course art work is needed but I always advise buying original if possible and something you love not just buying something that works with the decor.IMO you have very little space in the LR for anything else in the way of furniture except for a coffee table. If you had been my client I would have told you to buy a sofa and 2 choirs but it is done now so a nice small round coffee table is probably all that will fit maybe an arc lamp that will give you light in the middle of the space and also a small space for a drink to sit on. Get a fabulous chandeleir for that DR

At the very least the rug should run the same way as the table.

I love that rug, but ymmv (your mileage may vary). We are such messy eaters, I'd consider putting the rug in the living room and adding colorful accents to both rooms via art, linens, curtains and pillows. Nothing wrong with a more colorful patterned rug though, depends on the look you are going for. Do you want to "tie the rooms together?" If so, then you need a rug with some colors in it from both living and dining room.

We would look into a rug with some blue in it for the dining room. We agree that the rug might be able to work in the living room if the size is right.

"We" love the rug where it is..."we" think that it brings in the color of the fireplace nicely...and "we" think you're doing a great job...

So "we" think it's a keeper...

Do they have it in a rectangle? It looks square and that's "our" only issue with it.

The rug is from West Elm for those asking!
Thank you for the advice! We are going to find a new rug with more color and accessorize the area.

I hope yo can still use that rug. I love it, but agree that something with blue in it would be a better choice for the dining area. Could you move the rug to the living area? Then maybe add a couple of pillows with a blue pattern on the sofa and the two rooms will echo one another nicely. (They already go together very well- we are just talking about finishing touches that tie things together and provide some oomph.)
