A Plectranthus of some kind, I'd say. Does the foliage have a scent?

As you've discovered it isn't an annual. It's a tender perennial.

if you tell us where you are ... we can opine if it can be planted outdoors ...

regardless.. it can probably go outdoors for summer ... but be sure to keep in in full bright shade .. houseplants need a long hardening off period.. before they can take sun of any intensity ...

you might also want to repot it.. outside.. but im just guessing on that ...

there is also a houseplant forum.. you might find peeps there.. who also grow it as such ...

From the sound if it spent last summer outside. Plectranthus are common summer container plants. If the OP is overwintering Pelargoniums they'll have no trouble looking after this plant.

Thanks for the input. I have decided that it is a variegated plectranthus after comparing it to the pictures I've seen online. The leaves always made me think plectranthus, except that this plant has been growing totally upright and not even thinking about spreading out like others of that species that I've seen, so I wondered if it really was one. It has no scent that I can tell, and the stems are more woody than my other plec's. I live in zone 5 and it spends the summers outside.

The good thing is that they're easy to propagate. Just in case you don't see another likeit.

Taking cuttings would also encourage branching from farther back on what are becoming nearly bare stems.
