Mel’s Heritage is absolutely loaded with buds. It should be quite a sight. The CA native Lupinus albifrons is very drought tolerant, but I think it appreciated our extra rain this year. Either that, or it’s finally come into it’s own after 4 years.

Molineux is still small, but blooming well. I love the way it’s colors are always different. I’m also hoping it will stay rather small:)

Mystic Beauty has been impressive this spring. It’s been a much better plant for me than SDLM.

Moonlight Romantica is looking lovely this morning. I think it’s a little crowded, but the sweet peas won’t last forever.

Leveson Gower is filled with buds. I do see a little rust on a few leaves, so perhaps I should remove the climbing petunia axillaris. It self sows around the garden, and it’s night scent is amazing. It might be hogging too much water from the rose, and it’s definitely not helping with air circulation.

Still just one open bloom on Boule de Neige. Millie just checked the scent for me. Lisa

So beautiful, Lisa! My Duchesse is blooming as well, but still young and small. I have a tiny bud starting to open on my Mel's Heritage. He is my favorite scent in the garden and I hope he gets as large and lovely as yours!

Beautiful images and roses, Lisa. Your probably NOT Grandmother's Hat reminds me of Joasine Hanet. The images of Joasine Hanet on HMF are widely variant, but I grow this rose (no images for comparison) and there are similarities to your rose... more so than GH... to my eye.

I am nostalgic for a wild lupine in CA but I think it was shorter than the one you have. Do you live in an area that gets very hot? I'd like to try a lupine that can take the heat. I saw some Russel lupines in pots at Walmart this morning and nearly bought one because I don't think I've ever seen one in person. I have not seen it offered here either. So far I have had no luck with sweet peas but have tried. Only a few of my roses are starting to bloom.

The lupines made me especially happy, reminded me of a field of lupines near where I lived in British Columbia. I planted some in my garden and the next morning they had vanished; apparently they're primo rabbit food.

Your garden is going to explode. Can't even imagine what Mel's Heritage will be like with those thousands of buds.

MB was a MVP for me too. Very good repeat and I liked how it stayed short and wide.

I loke your companion plants so densely planted. I tried to do that too, but I think the roses roots get crowded sometimes and it probably doesn't help with my blackspot.

Goodness! Thanks for all the sweet compliments and Easter greetings. I think the extra rain did most of it, because I didn’t do much gardening over the winter. Many roses went unpruned, unfed, but thankfully watered with the blessing of good rain. I do plant many companion plants amongst my roses, since I love cutting different blooms for arranging, and I have just a small space. The lupine (Lupinus albifrons) is a CA native that doesn’t need summer water. It blooms better with a LITTLE help from the hose during the summer, but it’s not strictly necessary. I’m sure it would die a quick death in areas with summer rains, but it’s perfect for So CA. It’s the only lupine I’ve ever had long term success with, and it needs excellent drainage. In my heavy clay, that means planting it on the slope. I tend to mix in extra perlite and gravel for plants that need such sharp drainage. In the regular flower beds, I top dress things like dianthus with pea gravel to keep them happy. (That, and a gopher cage for any new dianthus I plant, because I’ve found the gophers love them.)

Sometimes my self seeders get a bit out of control, because I can hardly bear to pull them out. I always think “They don’t belong there, but I can use those for cutting, and leave the others on display in the garden.” It makes for a crowed, messy look sometimes. Most of the roses don’t seem to mind the crowding too much, probably because it’s so dry here, and I often have a little breeze. If I had high humidity, I’d never get away with crowding my roses the way I do.

I’m glad so many of you enjoyed seeing Duchess de Brabant. She’s at her best at this time of year, before she gets her usual powdery mildew. I have holes dug, and gopher cages sitting in the holes, waiting for me to plant my dahlias. I’m planting them to the SW of Duchess de Brabant, thinking they will give her some relief from the blazing hot sun in the afternoons. I’ve been planning on doing it since last spring, but never got around to actually doing it. My thinking is that the dahlias will be dormant underground during the winter and spring, when Duchess de Brabant doesn’t really need that pm shade. During the summer and fall, they will block some of the afternoon sun for her. I hope it works, because it sounds much easier than digging up and moving DdB. That’s not happening for many reasons:)

Mystic Beauty has been so lovely this spring. I really like it. My Souvenir de la Malmaison is growing very slowly, but at least it’s finally blooming. I’m calling it my dwarf SDLM. Lol

It's difficult for me to see a difference between SdlM and Mystic Beauty, but it's great that the latter is doing so well for you. When Mel's Heritage blooms your garden will be the bomb!

Wow, what a beauty you have near your house, and it's all for Easter. The Lord wanted to please you with beautiful flowers for this wonderful holiday. I usually go to church with my friends in the morning to pray first and then start celebrating this magnificent holiday. And while I'm going to church, I feel this festive atmosphere all over the city, and it inspires me a lot and also lifts my spirits. For some reason, even nature looks different on this day. After all, this world has a great connection between the Lord God and nature. Thank you for the photos. They are beautiful!
