Bedroom nightstand & new bench clashing

What paint colors or edits would you suggest?

The navy blue fabric on the bench works more for me than the dull teal paint on the nightstands but have had comments from friends & family that they are not working well together. I can paint the nightstands and the bench’s legs...or possibly replace the nightstands.

I'd find a smaller (around 36") mostly upholstered bench that will allow the detail on your bed frame to be more prominent. One with a simple but not heavy leg although a light & refined x-leg(or legs) might work, too.

Before you paint or buy or change anything else you need to decide on a color pallet for the room.

You said you are most strongly tied to the bedspread. It is very subdued.

Find a piece of art that has that color or an area carpet with that color that you love. Use what you find as the inspiration for your room and pick colors from the artwork to add color to your room.

I would look at replacing the carpet, painting the walls, replacing the bench and painting or replacing the night stand.

A FULL size bed needs a very small bench, about 36 inches in length!

You'd be better off with two cube style ottomans at the foot, each 18 inches square.

Look for something cute and petite for your room.

Bench isn’t doing anything for me. But how do you use it? Why do you have it? Colors don’t gel, I would paint the nightstands and get more colorful bed coverings

If you love the bench then keep it. I think you just need to go for an eclectic look to tie this all together and your bedding and bed have more of a prim look to them, not eclectic. I like the idea of getting accent pillows for your bed that bring in some navy. Your bedside lamp doesn't do much for me. I'd replace it with something that has a bit of brass to it - not quite so contemporary.

if u are intent on keeping the bedding, make that the focus as Jan suggested. the navy and peach are fighting each other and the navy is winning.

as far as the teal nightstand, its a spectator who doesn't belong.

you need a central point, then work to enhance it, not diminish it.

I also would change out the bench for one with a shorter length but like the wood tone of the current one with the bed - would get one with the same wood tone as the current one but with ivory/cream upholstery or a storage bench that is completly upholstered in ivory/cream and switch out the night stands for ones with a similar wood tone to the current bench or mirrored ones. Then find some art work in the lighter tones.

It just looks very tight in there. I'd probably lose the bench altogether bc the bed is very pretty.

Since the body of the lamp is the same color as the bench why not paint the legs the same color as the table. Tying it in as opposed to replacing one or the other would give it a more cohesive look. If you take your bench to your local Sherwin Williams store they can do an exact color match.

    happy, any updates?

Quick Fix: Paint the nightstand the same color as bed frame. Recover the bench in a fabric you like or just fashion a slipcover and tack it underneath. Bench frame is nice, leave it alone. Get a sconce (as suggested by Flo Mangan above) instead of lamp.

    Not a Pro.

Jan gave you great advise and some great inspiration.

Keep your current bedding. You love it. You said so. Work with that color.

The bench, good try, but does not work. Either return it, sell it, move it, or donate it and design the room your heart desires.

Not a fan of the bedding or of that bench. All I see are the solids in colorblocks, fighting. The styles and the wood finishes are all over the place. The room has no focal point. Why is the bench even here? It just makes the room look even more crowded. (As if the wall to wall nightstand-bed-nightstand didn't already cramp the look.)

That being said, since YOU like bedding and bench, there are some great suggestions to pull the three colours together in pretty ways. Just don't bring in other solid colour item.

The nightstand looks squished in the corner. If there is more room on the other side, can you get away with one nightstand?

Since you want to keep the bedding, paint the nightstands, I would go with a cream with navy accents. Also add more navy accents, such as small pillows for the bed. I would also paint the legs of the bench, they would do well with the cream color. You can always add accents, such as art that feature both the peach and navy colors.

With bedrooms that are so very small, I don't see the need for a bench to take up additional space. This device can be concealed slide out to hold a bedspread or blanket.

Well that's on my shopping list this week!

would you consider painting night stand the darker blue to match the bench and then some pillows with navy and peach?

The bench and the bedside table are not complimenting the room. The colors are mishmash and scale is off. Take out the bedside table and opt for a small glass and gold metal table to compliment the duvet and give you more visual space. Reupholster the bench yourself in neutral linen without the tufting. it will be much more pleasing to the eye.

    Any update?

I would recover the bench in a fabric that ties the other colours together and paint the legs to match the bed.

I love the bench, and like the nightstand, but I don't like either in your space.

I'd return the bench if you can, or move it to a different (complimentary) room.

I would remove the nightstand and lamp altogether (space is too tight for a night stand, and lamp is too big for the room), and put a framed painting above the bed with soft light scones on either sides of the painting.

You could go straight white or cream on the bedding and use throw pillows to tie the blues together giving your bedroom a more peaceful feeling.

ok if you are going to keep the bedding I agree. Scrap the bench if you are going to keep the side table get a new lamp. Maybe a lamp with a clear base. This doesn't look eclectic it looks mismatched.

I think doing both of the previous suggestions of painting the bench legs the same very pretty color of the nightstand and buying bedding that has the bench fabric and nightstand color will completely solve the problem.

A little late to the party. Don't know if you've already done anything to change things. You obviously bought the bench for a reason. I personally like it. I am a great fan of a larger bench rather than smaller if you are not overly crowded in the room. So since you already own all the pieces and there are a lot of suggestions to replace, if you can't return the bench, I love the bold color of the royal blue with the pink. The nightstand doesn't work you are right but instead of replacing a bunch of stuff why don't you paint the nightstand the color of the bed as previously suggested and drawers the color of the blue on the bench? Or, get bright blue glass knobs, then it ties both pieces together. I don't think that the goldish legs on the bench are bad with the bed either. It looks almost like a family heirloom to tell you the truth, So I like it. Maybe switch the pillow shams for a blue behind the white pillows. Add a vivid blue painting or art piece over the bed. OR even cover the lampshade in a bright blue and have the stand all cream like the bed. ? We live in such a disposable society I'd hate to see you get rid of things that you've already purchased just for the sake of a look. I don't think that you can "tie" in the blue and teal together.

Is that an artificial plant? Too many competing styles. And the proportions are off. Sorry, but it may be more than color that you need to tie the room together.

Biggest problem is the overwhelming blue bench due to both size and color. Take it out and then see what people say. Add teal blue shams behind the pillows. Maybe the same color throw at the foot of the bed. If you can return the lamps I agree sconces are a great space saver in such a tight space. If you want/have to keep the lamps not a deal breaker. If you must have a bench make it an unobtrusive cream one (hopefully somewhat smaller).

Update: haven’t incorporated any chances as the feedback has been very mixed! But thought I should let people know there are two full size beds in this room and it serves as a guest room.

But based on some of the feedback, I am contemplating selling the all benches and nightstands...I don’t know that we will install sconces in here. The lamps work fine and there can still be enough counter space.

    thanks for the update

i love the night stands, I would give them a coat of paint rather than get rid of them. If you are keeping the bedding, I would change the wall Color.

I think the bench blue is bright, the nightstand blue is dull. I would paint the night stands, and perhaps go with an orange or pink color - both look great with dark blue. Then get a cover for the beds that incorporates both the blue and the complementing color.

Can even just be adding a funky decorative pillow that brings both colors together so you don't have to go buying new bedding. I might actually prefer that to add some zing but not get too busy.

Ok so I like the benches even more now knowing that there are two with the beds. I still like the idea of using the blue from the bench as the POP of color. If you paint the night stands cream like the bed, add the blue pillows and an Art piece that spans between the two beds with that bright blue in it it will tie the whole room together. I do think you should take out the center table. That makes it look a little cramped. I agree with you on the lamps and tables. It gives people a place to put their things when going to bed. I love the pink bedding and wouldn't replace that either. The wall color is fine if you are using the blue as an accent color. So if you like the benches & the end tables keep them just rework them. There is absolutely NO need to sell everything just to get a different look if you already have things that YOU like. You can even find some fun fabric that you can put into frames for over the bed. You bought these things because you like them. Just need a little tweaking to make them go together. Remember it doesn't have to MATCH it just has to GO together.

Do you have any other furniture in the room, that you are not showing us?

My two cents. There is a lot of furniture in the room. You don't need three nightstands. I like your aqua nightstand, but you only need one in the middle of the two beds with one lamp. You may possibly be able to use two in the middle of the two beds, with the the two lamps, but I am not sure how that would look. Trial and error.

    Benches must go.

I agree that the right throw pillow with all the colors in the room can bring the room together. A throw blanket at the end of the bed in the shade of the nightstand may help also.

Now knowing there are two beds in the room, and that it's a guest room, I'll say that benches are good - people need a place to put their suitcases and other items. So are nightstands, but the three nightstands just don't work with the benches. Stick to the colors, of the benches and the pink bed coverings, then paint the nightstands the same color as the bed. As others have suggested, find some pillows to bring in the two colors.

Not sure how open you are to changing the color of the headboard upholstery, but it would solve the problem of the benches being an awkward focal point. Some artwork tying the navy, teal, and peach/pink together would relieve the color dilemma. I also think painting the very top spheres of the headboards black would relate to and soften the starkness of the dark lamps and drawer in between the beds. A teal rug placed under or near the benches would give the navy and teal a better chance to talk and also give the bedspread a little more contrast and attention.

    Some pics with art

I would paint the back wall Navy.

Personally I really like the nightstands. I think they go fine in the room and with your headboards and bedding. It is a more muted comfortable feeling. The navy of the benches seem too much for the rest of the color scheme. All of the elements together aren't cohesive. Also I really dislike the black table in the middle of the beds If you are intent on keeping the benches then I would change the side tables since you say that the bedding stays. You could either paint the side tables to match the headboard or you could go navy to match the fabric (navy would be my choice). I also agree with painting the legs of the benches to go with your head/foot boards.

Happy, so the pic with the navy colored headboard illustrates my point exactly. Although I don't think you need to recover the headboard Large Pillow shams up against the head board would have the same affect same as with the pics with the artwork. That vibrant blue in art would look fantastic above the bed. And if the end tables were the cream color they would blend wonderfully with the headboard. Stick with simple solutions. Its a guest bedroom and although you want it to be comfortable you also don't want it to be a huge undertaking for decorating either because unless you are hosting people weekly the room doesn't get a ton of use.

Here’s the wall in navy and a bright blue, and what navy pillows in the back would look like. The last photo is navy pillows in the back with the top headboard spheres in black. I kinda like that one with no artwork.

With navy pillows in back, black headboard tops, and different artwork. All these products are on Etsy.

Oops here’s the photo I mentioned with navy pillows, black headboard tops, and no artwork.

Well darn the pic posted the first time after all. My mistake.

I feel the space with the nightstand is cramped. Maybe a wall swing lamp for lighting.

I like the bed, bedding & nightstands, but the bench is much too heavy for the space. If you insist on keeping it, paint the legs the color of the wood of your headboard and reupholster, without the tuffting, it in a lighter fabric to coordinate with your bedding.

I like the pair of tables, but that wall is too crowded, crammed actually.. Even if you removed the center nightstand. The benches are pretty, and I love the dark blue, but they do not work in the room/with the bedding. Also, so many pairs. If this was a room in our home, I would use one blue night table between the beds, and use a skinnier lamp (more table top area). If you want to use 2, then find two lamps that do not match, but go together.
