Thank you. I ordered some from Violet Barn yesterday, just three. It seems most people think of these as indoor plants. The streptocarpus I have been buying for a few years gets to be a pretty nice sized plant and I have had it outdoors in morning sun. I hope the new ones I've bought will also make a nice sized plant and be able to live outdoors. I live in zone 7. I have treated them as annuals but may try to overwinter my new ones indoors. I did see Harlequin Lace on ebay and at Violet Barn I think. It's pretty. I wanted to get Moscow Lady too. The one I won on ebay is Tractor Beam. I think it's a Bristol variety. The guy has very high feedback and seems to care about what he's doing. Name is plantmaniac.

That's not a streptocarpus, that's streptocarpella.

Yup...Streptocarpus subgenus Streptocarpella..

It is easy to overwinter them inside - they do stretch in a low light - but comes spring - you can root tons of cuttings in your hanging pot - and get it ready to go outside when the morning frosts are over.

You can order Streptocarpella online - but all you will get will be a starter. It is impossible to ship a basket. These baskets are filled with cuttings in January - and kept in greenhouses on a good light so comes the spring - they sell a full blooming hanging pot for $$$.

So - you probably need a greenhouse...heated. Just kidding.

Oh, I'm glad I posted the picture so I could find out what it is. I bought it in a 4" little short pot so there was only one to the pot. It is good to know how to make a nice sized Streptocarpus plant. I am looking forward to seeing what my new ones do.

How does Streptocarpella differ? My plant was never out of bloom once it got going.

How they differ? From Streptocarpus - they have stems - so they are sometimes called caulescent Streptocarpus - means having stem. The regular Stretocarpus - grows as a basal rosette - with an extremely short stem. Genetically they are very close - but do not cross. Streptcarpella is very close to Saintpaulia- but there are no successful crosses as well - even people keep trying.

There are not that many Streptocarpella hybrids - and the color of the flowers varies from pale lilac to lavender purple with 3 whites I know.

If you start with a cutting or a small plant - you need good light and maturity to start blooming. After it starts... it will go on and on.

Here is a species Streptocarpus holstii - very easy and fun to grow - but it is probably too rangy to make a good basket.

I've about sold out all of my streps for this season. But there are a ton of them on ebay right now. Some of those are well known sellers like Plant Maniac is David Thompson.

I second Hyn. Hybridizer David Thompson sends hefty healthy plants. He is not on ebay right now.

2 sellers - vmeevmee and Neil s Streps - are also hybridizers - so probably the only place to get their new hybrids. Kathystreps sends healthy streps - but sometimes they are on a small side. Though our club ordered a batch from her - and her plants were A+

There are also sellers from Poland and Croatia - usually the international sellers put extra care in their plants and their packing to withstand the longer shipping time. If you want new Polish and Ukrainian varieties that are not widely available in US - go for it.

Hmm, Plant Maniac was on Ebay this week though so they must have just ended. He'll probably list more shortly. Kathy Spissman (Kathy'sStreps) and Denis Miller (Neil's Streps) also have a lot of plants listed. Plants from them may be smaller but they are both reputable sellers.

OP's plant looks like my Streptocarpus saxorum. (Or did that one get renamed?)

Kathy Spissman of Kathystreps (on Ebay) is now carrying a ton of plants I liquidated. Also if anyone is interested I will soon begin to disburse a lot of seedlings through my Etsy shop - they aren't there yet but I have four flats of them getting ready to bloom and once another flat of seedlings get some size to them I'll be liquidating them in group lots if anyone is interested.

I will also have extra seed to spare from my own crosses from this spring soon. I am happy to share on the condition that people let me know how they bloom in case we stumble upon something worth naming and registering later. I only sow a tiny bit of seed at a time and each pod may contain thousands of seeds. I'll probably list seed on my Esty shop later as well simply because it's convenient and people can see my feedback and policies there.

I usually plant my extra flats of streps in my shade garden but we are having a drought this year!

Yeah, I noticed they are sucking up all our rain! Give it back! It's dreadfully dry here. With a cabin up on a mountain surrounded by National Forest, of course I worry about forest fires when it gets really dry. Last year we had something close to 130 inches of rain!

I must admit,,,,we have flooded farm fields around me. It has even made it hard to cut our grass,,,some areas are a little low on our 5 acres also. Wish I could send some your way! Rosie

I didn't see all these posts last year. I'm starting to check ebay this year but it's too early so far. Anyway our weather ( NC foothills) is likely to be too cold for awhile yet. We have had some temps in the low 70's in January this year. Last year I bought one plant from plantmaniac on ebay and three from the Violet Barn. All bloomed almost nonstop all summer and fall. I'm overwintering them without lights indoors. I take them outside whenever I can . I was surprised how big the blooms were last year. They were very showy. I registered with Etsy and bought about 10 clematis plants, so will be checking there for plants this spring. I don't need a whole lot of them but maybe a few more colors. I have some gloxinia seed from Geo seed . What I planted a couple of years ago didn't germinate. Will try again , in case the seed is still good.

Usually the gesneriad seeds stay viable for 6 months - but every so often... you can get a germination from much older seeds. Next time keep them in a fridge. Since you do not have anything to lose - plant them all - on a surface, do not cover with soil, but cover the container with a baggie - and give it light. Light stimulates the hatching. If nothing hatches in 6 months - too bad, but it is kind of expected.

If you would take your indoors plants outside - you will acquire some pests .. thrips for sure, may be foliar mealy bugs and mites. baby mealies and thrips fly - and mites can be carried by the wind.

The streps I bought from the Violet Barn a few months ago have been flowering like crazy, including two dozen flowers at a time on "Laurzie".
