We have several complexes here in Napa Valley that have done this and I work with clients all the time to get rid of the apartment look. What bothers you the most?

One of the things that bothers me is the poor instillation of the base boards and other wood trim. I think all of the trim and base boards will have to be replaced and a lot of poorly applied caulk removed.

That is a simple projects. After a while trim gets funky & outdated. Try a contrasting color for the trim to the walls.

A duplex back to a single family?

Usually chrisdp, the second door will be removed. If it is not side by side it is sometimes used as a back door ,but it depends on placement on the house.

We have done a few in Napa Valley. They always turn out well.
