Yew hedge planted too tight...leave it or fix it?

A yew hedge was planted in our backyard last year, each plant roughly 1ft apart. The yews are still fairly small (around 24" in height). My question:

  1. If I leave the hedge, will the plants suffer from not having enough space?
  2. Should I take out every other yew to increase the spacing?
  3. Or should I take out all of them and start from scratch?
