Do you need space to walk on that side of the pool? We have cherry laurels on the long wide fence (like you are showing).

The laurels will need to be trimmed to get the hedge look...takes maybe two years. They flower in early summer and then get berries...stay green all year. One thing...they can be a bit messy, but we find it worth it to do a bit of clean up with the vac to have them.

Here's a rendering, just for ideas. (Shows nonspecific plants since we don't know where you are.) This mounts a piece of weatherproof art on the fence as a focal point, then flanks it with a couple of fastigiate (naturally narrow) trees and groups of shrubs that offer variety in color, height, and leaf texture.

I'm a tree nut. I love trees. I have planted over 400 trees in my yard in addition to the ones that were here before me. I say that to say this ... if that were my yard and pool, I wouldn't plant anything there. I'd leave it as grass for easier access around the pool. I would add more colorful flowers in the pots and maybe add a few more pots.

Thanks, though we’re not worried about access on the back side of the pool, there’s no real reason to be there other than retrieve the occasional pool toy lol. Need to soften up the lines and add some depth and texture as opposed to the flat monolithic fence. @simplynatural, we’re in Dallas Tx.

Chris, you might consider Skyrocket Juniper. No shaping needed as they only get about 2-3’ wide at maturity, but grow to about 15-20’

Plant those in the back of the area close to fence and then do some hardy shrubs in front. Choose selections that aren’t “messy”. Hydrangeas don’t drop a lot of leaves or flowers, but they may not be appropriate for your location or space.
