Do you want all cabinet hardware to match? If so, with a black islands, I don't think matte black would work. There wouldn't be enough contrast for the island cabinets. So I think the two options are:

Option 1: Do brushed nickel everywhere

Option 2: Matte black pulls on the perimeter, brushed nickel on the island.

I would stay with brushed nickel on all. Make them substantial and not "wimpy".

I'd warm this up with polished brass pulls.

try stainless or polished nickel and work on different shapes..cup pulls...oversized knobs..not sure where handles would work best as your plan isn't shown. Your materials look more refined , and I would have said pewter or hammered iron but not with your palette....as it is a little more "precious". Polished nickel is actually quite nice and focus on shapes.....vary them.

I'm dealing with a similar choice - I think when the black pulls are done well they look so good, especially when they pick up other black accents throughout the kitchen. But I also worry that maybe the brushed nickel is a safer, timeless and "easier" option to achieve
