As to your questions: Who knows? You've told us nothing about the rug except where you bought it. Who could possibly have any idea? Reputable manufacturer? Chinese garbage?

I've done that, unfortunately I can't afford $5,000 minimum for my bedroom rug. If you have a suggestion on where I can get a bedroom rug for under $1,500, let me know. Thanks.

Try rugsusa.com; manhattanrugs.com; erugs.com; and others. Some of the rugs made in China have terrible odors and it doesn't go away. Sorry, for your agony, return it. Rugs require a good bit of shopping to get the right size, color/patterns and quality in any budget. Good luck. If you can post a photo of the one you LOVE, maybe we can help find a better choice in a similar look for you.

I will post a picture. The rug was made in India, not China, so I thought it would be ok, but after reading about it, it seems like the odor isn't going to go away. I'll take a picture of what it looked like online and also what it looks like in person tomorrow, when it is light out.

Well, I was using 'Chinese' as a pejorative synonym for 'cheap sweat shop junk', which the overwhelming majority of décor store (both online and brick-and-mortar) is.

But it could be from Indian or Vietnamese or Malaysian or any number of other countries' sweat shops too.

We have friends that have purchased Pottery Barn rugs that don't smell..perhaps PB checks them out first??

I would send yours back, I would think that sleeping with the chemical off gasses would be a health hazard.

Many wools are being produced in India. Even very. very FINE wool broadloom at $$$$$$$$$ pricing can have an odor. Then it's wrapped, and endures the humidity of a boat ride.

I suggest you find a fire restore place in your area, that has an ozone area. I have had to to this for a client with a brand new area rug custom sized here,, and ab$$olutely gorgeous.

Or........ roll this rug up, wait for a brilliant, dry and sunny day. Take this outside, and let it remain in full sun all day. Do the backing side to the sun, and even use a second day for the face.

Every single thing is different in India, including the WATER. Even production of wool uses water and..............well. There you go.

Try the sun, as Jan suggested. It can take a few days. Backing to the sun so you dont fade the rug.

This is the photo of the rug from Wayfair's website. I have already taken it out of the room, so I can't take a photo of it in the room. Just it sitting outside on the front porch, I can still smell it in the house!

oooh. That is a very pretty rug. I'm sorry this is your experience, thank you for posting. Aside from "airing" the rug..... A pet mess spray might work to tame remaining odor. Nature's Miracle kills pet enzymes that remain after clean-up. I've used it on area rugs and it has not bleached them. I purchase it at Petco.

In the 1970s, my aunt traveled to China and bought a Yak fur coat - spare the judgment. It rained while she wore it and it smelled like bad urine afterwards. She could not get the smell out of the coat. You never know how products are manufactured.

You need SUN. A full day of it on BOTH sides. It isn't going to fade in a day either. It sure as hell won't hurt it. Open the dang bedroom windows, run a fan.

We had all the windows open and French doors to our porch for 48 hours and there was no improvement. Its on the front porch now so I guess we can try to find an area to lay it out where it won't get sprinkled on.

Must agree with Jan that stinky rug isn't just a problem with Wayfair. (and in fact,I've purchased two wool rugs from Wayfair that did not have this problem) Getting your rug outdoors sounds like a reasonable plan IF you are keeping it.

I've lived in India, and there are certainly sweatshops there, as indeed there are throughout Asia. That's a fact, not racism. There are also fine carpet makers in India: I have several good quality hand knotted rugs and they do not and never did have any odor (or any adhesive backing). The same applies to a small rug I have from China, which country also produces some fine products.

The problem here is not that Asian countries produce some cheap junk, but that American ones import it. And the only way to tell whether you have junk or quality is to eyeball it. Id return the rug, and I'd ask myself if a $1500 rug that I can't use is really such a bargain. And then I'd hit real carpet shops or some of the reputable on line dealers people have mentioned.

Go to Macys or a local store. You'll see the actual rug. Macy's has a large selection of inexpensive rugs, especially when they have a sale.

Even the most LUXURIOUS 150.00 a yard broadloom has a backing!! Yes.......it does. : ) and India can be an offender.

The type used on a hooked rug is different. a HAND KNOTTED rug has no backing. At all.

Don't saturate or wet the rug with anything. Not yet. Go the sun like a moth to a flame. You have nothing to lose. Wayfair will still take it back.

Some of the synthetic rug dyes they use on wool have horrible odors that will never go away. My mother had such a rug, nice Tibetan wool, lovely rug with no backing, and she tried everything (airing, cleaning, chemicals) to banish that smell but nothing worked. It ended up in my barn and it smelled for 15 years before i finally burned it.

Send it back while you can!

Jan - just to be clear, Im aware of the difference between hand knotted rugs and machine woven broadloom, and was merely making the point that you can certainly buy quality products from India and China and the rest of Asia, but you have to deal with reputable importers.

So we have contacted Wayfair and they have issued me a credit. I'm not sure I want that instead of a refund, since I'm a little nervous to buy another rug from there. We have taken the rug outside on the patio into the sun to see if that will help, I'm hoping so. Hollybar: Can you link me to rugs you have purchased on Wayfair with no problems so I can compare to the type of rug I bought? Thanks.

Re: the rug - get rid of it! Can you purchase broadloom, cut it to size and have the edges finished? We did that years ago and it was very reasonably priced compared to an area rug.

Listen. Please go to a decent broadloom store near you? The number of patterns and colors available in wool or nylon broadloom are amazing . Get off the internet. You can have this cut and bound to with a fraction of an inch to the size you want! Go in parson, and not to a big box. You can do a 9 x12 for as little as 1500.00

weedmeyer-- the rugs I bought on Wayfair I recognized. One was described as by "Foundry Select". It is actually a Justina Blakeney (Jungalow blog) design made by Loloi. Wool/Poly blend,I paid around $700 for a nominal 9 by 12. (that's about 70% off list) It shipped from Loloi and with Blakeney's name woven on the back. Now discontinued. The other was an over-dyed wool that I recognized as a Solo Vibrance. Made in Pakistan. Can't recall who Wayfair credited it to,maybe Isabelline? Again, the rug came from the mfg.,clearly marked,without a flaw. No smell. Same rug is on Bloomie's site. Right now, the rug market is in even more of a Buyer Beware! cycle than usual. There are great deals,craptastic deals and lots in between. So much depends on your due diligence. If you have access to a local seller, I'd use them. I'd also suggest looking on places like Craig's List or at yard sales. I've picked up used trad,all wool Karastan's for a song. (meaning 9 by 12 under $500) Yes,they are machine made but are among my faves for bedroom rugs. Best of luck. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience. That,umm,stinks.

The rug I purchased was 10x14 ish. I have put it out in FULL SUN on the patio, not the grass, don't want to kill the grass, but I have also requested a return and refund from Wayfair as I don't think it is going to resolve. I have looked at the broadloom option, but didn't find what I wanted, but I guess I will revisit that option.
