Promising new Hosta

These are either new to cultivation or just new to me that have shown good growth / characteristics in this first spring in my garden.

Winter Frost - I picked this up late last summer at the Green Hills sale based on being a Doug (and Mardy) Beilstein introduction. I hadn't seen any pictures of it until I just looked in the Hosta Library now. Wow! A ruffled blue that's happy to see you. Only had one or two eyes when I planted it but already has a bunch coming up this year.


Petticoat Junction - Another D&M B Hosta. This one probably had 3 eyes but got a little munched on by deer. Doesn't seem to have slowed it down at all. I love the tall vase-like shape (from last year), fun green color (before it settles down into a darker blue/green) and the ruffles don't bother me one bit.


Love Song - OK, this one had 4 eyes with long petioles and 2 long leaves per eye. It was enticing, but just awkward in the garden. I love the fresh start in the garden without the sparse, elongated look from pot production and really long ruffled, folded leaves with deep veins.


Kisuji - This weak little thing was almost too small for the garden and not showing a lot of streaking. This was a happy surprise. Now it's a cute, little thing.

    these were planted last summer and I think they look great..

    Blue Mouse Ears..
    Krossa Regals by the stones..see how they're smaller than their neighbors (Elegans..Abiqua Drinking Gourd..and the tag said Striptease but I don't think so)..
    and my $1 NOID heuchera made it..

      How Bout That! - A streaked Sum and Substance Sport that I bought from the Green Hills sale because it was a streaked Sum and Substance sport. More interesting than exciting. Needs time to grow up, but those spring colors knock my socks off. Now I see how it got the name.


      Gila River - I've loved this one since I bought it spur of the moment from Wade & Gatton last year. The large flowers last year were a shock, but this spring color and low growing mound were a bit of a surprise. The edge will brighten pretty soon by the looks of it.


      Aquamarine - not completely in love with this one yet, but you can see the purple edge.


      Bridal Falls - OK, not new, but it really loves its new location. I've not been impressed with this one I planted in 2016, until now! Now if I can just keep the dogs from stepping on it.

      apparently you gotta thang for ruffled edges.. eh???? .... lol ...

      is green hills dougs nursery? .. or is that solberg?

      i never thought of a streaked division as a sport... nor a TC liner streaker as a sport ... i either killed that brain cell..most likely thru healthy living .... i will have to mull this ... in red wine i suppose.. lol ...

      isn't it great when a new hosta finally grows?..even this early I see improvement in some of my new ones..I've admitted this many times - I love ruffles!!..I've called it wavy edges (still learning hosta jargon)..love your assortment of pics today..

      Steve- you got some real ‘finds’! i specially like Gila River - great color! I’d love to see it later in the season.

      And Kisuji- I’m starting to appreciate streakers and I’d also like to see that as it matures.

      Very very nice finds Steve. I like them all, but I have started to lean toward the elongated leaves like Love Song.

      I ordered Tidewater and Jade Cascade.

      I agree with you on Aquamarine, mines about the same size, just curious what it will look like when it grows up.

      Bridal Falls is a top 10 of mine. My first one was doing great in pretty much sun, then I moved it to a shadier location, and it has been languishing since. Just got a second one and put it in a spot very close to where the first one was doing so well. I want a giant Bridal Falls sooo bad!

      Thanks all, I'm still in the newbish buying phase, so I bought plenty last year. I am also liking the long leaves and bought 2 Tidewaters last year and Jade Cascade I bought this year. Bridal Falls is in more sun now, lesson learned. Green Hills is Solberg's nursery. Spent the weekend moving a bunch of grass for this year's new Hosta bed. Need to remember to take pictures before and after.
