Your cabinetry (base and upper) looks to be in good shape but look dated. Paint is a good solution. You could also add a more substantial crown to the upper cabinets (like in your inspiration photo). The antique finish of the inspiration photo cabinets is quite nice. Am wondering if some of your uppers would benefit from adding glass to give more transparency. Could you install a longer island that is pushed more toward the range. The orientation would be different from you inspiration photo which may not be the best. Your kitchen already has downlights (which is good) but you might consider adding a couple more. New pendants would also go a long way toward freshening up your kitchen. Good luck!

Good comments from Norwood. Painting cabinets is definitely possible. Most people suggest having it done professionally which is pricey but often good advice. Know that painting cabinets and doing a good job is very time consuming and not for the inexperienced, but DIY will be very inexpensive for those up to the challenge.

As stated by Norwood, making the island larger will require you to orient it the opposite direction of your inspiration photo. You need to make sure to keep a minimum of 36" in clearance on each side of the island (with 42" being preferred).
