Your budding artists could create their own art which you could have professionally framed. :) Or you can find ready made art and use it as the inspiration for the rest of their rooms.

I am replacing the white bed and the dressers. I MIGHT reuse the dressers and just repaint them

Basically it's an open slate. I haven't started renovating yet :)

In my opinion, I would start with painting the walls a solid color. Whatever her favorite color is. From the looks of it, she likes pink. Try something with pink and a brown. Next I would get more light in there. The fan light is not enough. Put some sconces in there or floor/table lamps. It's always excellent to reuse the dressers. Just spray paint them a color that matches the wall. Nothing to dark. Don't get offended but, I would take the tv out of the room it takes up to much space. Get a door on the big closet. Paint the closet doors white put stainless steel knobs on it. I also recommend taking off those curtains off the windows. Put a nice tan cloth blind on them. That's all I could offer now! Good luck.

2) Would your girls thrive on sharing a room for sleeping, and using the other room for playing and crafts? My boys came up with that idea when they were little, and it worked very well for a number of years.

I am not leaving the tv in there. Before my youngest was born that was a playroom and I just never pulled it out

I think the colors in childrens room are what inspires them every day. I would suggest using the "use a photo" or "choose a color theme" features from the Color911 app, I created several color themes in the Color911 app that would be fun to decorate with. Color911 is an app that allows you to create your own color palettes or photograph something that inspires you and pull your colors from there. For example of you have comforters for the girls you can take a picture with the Color911 app, pull colors from it to decorate the room with those colors. I have attached a photo of how that works,, its a lot of fun. Another option with the app is to take a premade color theme and use the colors to decorate your room. I like doing lighter walls and brightly colored ceilings... so when they get into bed they see lots of bright color!. I attached a sample of what it looks like in the app to pull colors from a photo. I hope you have fun with it and that it inspires you!

That is an awesome app! One thing I may do is install crown moulding and a built-in column where the baby changing table is between the shelves. I also have no idea what to do for window treatments

At walmart theyre is this new Disney wall paint that is either glittery,mettalic and chalkboard paint in assortment of colors its $10.97 for 1 quart and $29 for a gallon I bought this glittery and made polka dots that my girls can write on and is easily cleanable :D

And for your windows get white curtains and maybe a bright color that stands out as it will make the girls room clean and bigger and hang them higher above the window to make it seem as if they have tall windows.

Great ideas! The big window in the first pic is actually two huge windows on the front of the house. Would a long white curtain be enough? Or should I install like wood slat blinds also?

Wy don't you do like a fantasy theme or a princess theme like the disney princess. Or you could just do like a light solid pink room or even a chalkboard wall for one wall so they can easily draw and it comes off than do a pink to purple or blue duvet or something than on the shelves add her toys and stuff te white color is fine

How much fun!...... since you have some creative little girls just a few ideas

A large round table and chairs in which ever bedroom is bigger , lazy susan with art supplies in the center

Build up... a loft space with curtain to close off underneath

A raised stage space area with curtains of course and room for dress up clothes and a pretty chair for mom to watch their plays

A chalk wall....doesn't have to be a dark color

A large armoire backed inside with mirror to house dress up clothes etc, giving a room that grand princess feel

Carpet tiles in different colors... you could even create a hopscotch pattern

one advice as a mother of a princess myself; once your older one hits first grade that princessy feeling is going to look so outdated. try stripes, they look modern and ageless at anytime. if you are not into stripes try a darker ceiling (hot pink or purple) and lighter walls. if they like to draw you could try one chalk wall. best of luck

One more idea, maybe crazy... put both girls in the same bedroom and change the other into a fantasy play space....combining art,, dress up, princess, all their likes in the same space... oh and don't for get music maybe the addition of a stereo and loose the tv. Maybe not having such a themeatic room... more based on interests and creativity.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful ideas! I am going to go with a zebra, eccentric style room for my younger daughter Mackenzie. She is a very creative, silly girl who definitely prefers the funky vibe.

My older daughter Melanie is going to have a more subdued girls room with a focus on flowers, butterflies, and ballerina. She also loves music so I want to incorporate that theme

Love your themes. Just thought I'd throw out some ideas:
1)Have you thought about including a reading nook in one of the rooms. If you have the space and DIY skills this window seat is lovely (attached pic). I think the book racks are from pottery barn. I also came across this fantastic idea for using inexpensive ikea picture rails! (I will be using this):

I just redid my five year old little girls room as well. We bought the bead board wallpaper if you have not seen it look it up, its awesome and thick not like regular wallpaper and its cheaper than putting up bead board. We painted the top pink and the bottom white. If you was nice kid friendly furniture and organization shop ikea. We love the expedit collection for our daughter. We used a shelf turned sideways for under the window seating. Ikea also has some fun lighting and rugs, as well as art tables just the right size. There furniture is well built and easy maintenance.

I have a five year old Grand daughter and she would love anyone of these!

Thanks for the information on the beadboard! I think it will work great for a few of the projects I am lining up. I am still not sure how I am going to arrange everything but I have an extensive photo collection from browsing the site for inspiration. We will see how it turns out =)

Make her room a process room buy a new bed with drawers and buy a new night stand brown and new certains brown with some little pink flowers on them hard wood floors brown fuzzy carpet pink walls hang some family pics on the wall doll house in the corner of her room

I would say, honestly, that no room, no matter how well designed, looks good when it's messy; but it's tough keeping kids' rooms clean; after all, they're KIDS! So I would suggest starting with space-saving, easy to use organizers. I would put in long/narrow beds or cushion/pillow topped bench seats with differently-sized storage cubbies underneath. Either color-code or use small printed/laminated photo labels for each basket to show what type of toy goes in which basket.

As for window treatments, shutter blinds look great; but are insanely expensive :0/ I think the curtains you have up are great, you just need tie-backs and keep them open during the day to let more light enter the room.

I would also put closet doors on the closet, and framed pictures they've created (easily interchangable for new artwork) on the walls. You could use some chunky, small frames (shadow-box style) connected by a ribbon with bows at each connection...

You could put chalkboard paint on the bottom half of the wall and beadboard separating that and either paint or wallpaper above...although you would have to be ok with cleaning up chalk dust whenever they create their murals :)

I would use tall dressers to open up floor space, and white furniture simply because it goes with everything, and due to the quickly-changing tastes of small children as they grow, you will be redoing the room in a few years to keep up with them anyway...reclaimed furniture is another fun way to finish out a room; you can find a lot of stuff reasonably on CL.

Having the girls share a room in a bunkbed and using the other room as the toy room is a FAB idea...a lot less cleaning for you (only one room to pick up instead of two...or three if you count the living room, as in my house - assuming you can enforce a strict "toys-go-in-the-toy-room-only" rule), easier to put in organizer systems and use them, and more play space for the girls.

As for color pallets, whatever colors you choose, I would use dark/bright colors as accents (pillows, pictures, curtains) and a more neutral colors for walls (light pink, yellow, etc) or do one accent wall in a bright color (eg orange). That way the bright/dark colors don't overwhelm the room :) Repeat the accent color at least 3 times - eg, pillows with red, curtains with red, some red picture frames....this ties the color together, creating a "flow" through the room.

Fantastic ideas! I didn't mention that my younger daughter is deaf and therefore can be difficult to have as a bedroom partner, especially at night. I can see my older daughter screaming at her to be quiet while she is oblivious to it :)

Ohhh lol - yeah, that wouldn't work! I hope the other suggestions were helpful though! :) :) Enjoy, it sounds like you have a fun project ahead of you - my kids' rooms & patio are my favorite spots to dec out!

I have gotten a lot of fantastic ideas and am currently building out my floorplan for how I am going to arrange it all before I start buying specific pieces. We are going to pick her a full furniture set at Rooms To Go Kids unless you know if a better place? I want the dressers/bed/nightstand to match and be of reasonable quality without breaking the bank =)

Sorry, I'm not familiar with good sources to buy kids furniture from - maybe others on here have suggestions in that area...I'm more of a "make it or upcycle it" type lol :) :) I certainly don't blame you for wanting something quick, simple, & easy though!

For the zebra room - here's an idea I found that I love--could be applied to a younger girls' room in terms of types of furniture. It's not so harsh black/white either...doing the zebra pattern in a nontraditional color adds a lot of style and is a little unexpected in my opinion when compared to a traditional black/white zebra rug for example. This green rug is great too.

Barn doors would look great in this room. There are many options that these types of doors offer. Take a look on our site at the hardware options and doors. I feel like your rooms are too pastelly. Everyone assumes that because it's a childs room, you need toned down colors, but that's not true. Bold colors can work amazingly in a kids room, and you don't have to be as afaid of using a bright hue as you do for the rest of the house.

I say pick a bold color, and use alot of white to contrast it, possibly even white wainstcoating depending on how bold the hue is. Get really fun furniture and don't be afraid think outside the box. For example, have you ever considered a custom built bed that doubles as a fort?

For two little girls who are 3 and 5, I’d definitely try to keep the rooms playful but not overcrowded. Since they’re adventurous and creative, I’d leave as much open floor space as possible and use the furniture and accessories to create areas for different kinds of play. We have some Goodevas equipment at home and I really like how it can fit into a child’s room without taking over the whole space. Things like a Pikler triangle, ramp, arch or balance board give them a place to climb and move, but they can also become part of imaginative games. I’d probably choose simple furniture and let the girls bring the personality through their art, books and play things rather than making every part of the room themed. That way the room can grow with them instead of needing a complete redo every time their interests change.
