Part of my spring garden prep involves resetting the concrete blocks encasing my raised bed hugel. The bottom block was filled with wood chips, while the upper block contained manure, compost & soil. All materials have almost completely broken down since they were filled last year. I am in Wisconsin.

While most of the insect life I‘ve found has been easily identifiable, this particular one is a puzzlement. It’s somewhat similar to ladybug larvae, but i don’t think that’s it. It’s a segmented larvae, black on top and white underneath, with coloring around the edges I would describe as deep pink or magenta. Since I can’t talk to anyone at the Extension until later this week, I was hoping someone here could tell me what these are. That way, I can let them out of bug jail, either with a full pardon (like the stag beetle larvae) or with the sentence of becoming fish food (as are the wire worms). Thanks!
