Fred Flintstone house needs help

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi so I bought this house with the flintflinstone rocks on the outside. I don't want to remove the stones bc it might be too expensive. Painting them would be worse. But what can I do to the rest of the house that will go well with the stones. I really like the modern look if possible.

Nothing wrong with the stone ... actually with the right paint it could look contemporary. I don’t know what your budget is but i have a few thoughts:

Paint it all, including the garage door in a color complimentary to your stone.

When your budget allows, I would continue the walkway down to the street, separate from the driveway.

Re-landscaping is in order along with new light fixtures, especially those flanking garage door. Looks like a new screen door would look good.

i would trim out the window in front.

    Good luck, nice looking house.

Thank you k Lawrence. Yeah I want to keep the stone I just feel like it needs an updated look and I'm just not sure what colors would work for it and make it look modern.

Use a paint visualizer tool to try out different colors. I would keep the stone and try a taupe on the siding, stucco, and garage door. Cut the unnecessary top off your mailbox post.

Whats throwing the whole house off right now, is your garage doors. They should be the color of the paint above them. I dont mind the color of the paint. It looks good. It could be a closer match to a color from the stone, but, it wasnt a bad choice. I dont like the black paint around the storm door. That should be color of house. Storm door could be a lighter color, closer to the color of your trim. You can see the door through it, so that could be a brighter color. Its a very cute house, and it does have a bit of modern look to it in some areas. New landscaping with some color and a plan where plants go, would help considerably with the curb appeal, probably more than new paint would. Congratulations on your new home. Enjoy it. It looks to be very nice.

I don't think painting the stone would be worse. This could be a knockout house without that neon yellow stone.

Nothing looks worse than painted stone. Work with it, a close up picture of it would help. Bring home some color samples & compare with the stone...

Lots of things look worse than painted stone. Vases with sticks for one...

My, that painted white stone house looks awful. I bet it was gorgeous before it was painted.

    Two more iterations:

If that's all the stone you have, I'd get an estimate to remove and replace. It looks like it's just a thin stone veneer. You might be surprised at how easily it comes off.

THIS is the Flintstone house, located in Northern California. Okay, Hillsborough. Used to be white. Also now adorned with dinosaurs and lots of other “colorful” yard sculpture.

removing that stone and patching w/stucco shouldn't cost you that much. I mean, this is your home? what's it worth to you? a few thousand to have it removed, stuccoed and painted is nothing when you consider how long you plan on living there. (unless you plan on leaving in a year or two?) Do the demo yourselves and save money. those stones are only on there w/mortar. shouldn't be that difficult to remove. Disposing would be another issue.

i like Grover's darker colors, new garage door.

Love your second pic Grover! Check out CHI garage doors. I researched garage doors for months and these were the most realistic-looking I found! Accents woodtones in planks (and you can add windows in various configurations including the one Grover suggested)

Removing the stone (and especially McMansion-izing it with stucco/Dryvit) will drop the value of the house.

The stone is the most high-value finish on the house; throw it away (or slap $40 worth of latex on it) at your own peril.

There's lots more attractive stone veneer out there and it's not as expensive as you might think:

Someone on this board had the same problem and got a quote to have it removed. They were on a tight budget and were pleasantly surprised at how little it cost. It's just stuck on so with the right tools it's not that big a job.

In my neighborhood some houses have similar stone, and another option is to go right over it with stucco. Nobody is keeping it. I disagree that this stuck-on stone veneer adds value to the house.

Or paint it, or whitewash over it with thinned gray paint. Don't try to work with it.

I love the garage doors I thought about hanging doors also to something like these. The front door there is a screen long entryway leading to double doors. Are u saying paint screen?

I was kinda wanting a gray color or a nice green but these stones make it difficult. I just don't want to remove them.

Show us a picture of the entry way please.

Paint them if you don't want to remove them. People who say that the paint won't stick have never accidentally dripped paint on stone walls and tried unsuccessfully to get it off. You just don't have that much of it to paint.

Oh good heavens. Get rid of that whole vestibule.

Maybe there’s too many colours? Would it look better if the whole body of the house was the orange/yellow of the stone?

Grover wow that makes so much more space looks great! That's a great thought. Not sure about those green doors but yeah looks so good. As far as painting the color of the stone I feel like it needs a different color.

Iceage, the doors are green because I stole them. They were free. You can afford to paint them. ;-)
