You have wired two or more things (fan,light,green ground) in series. If you don't know what that means or don't know how to check,call an electrician before things turn worse.

^^ Possibly what he said, but it did not sound like this fan was newly installed ("thinking the fan was just getting old"). If everything worked normally prior to the lights beginning to flicker, perhaps there something else going on.

You'd have to describe or show how it's wired in order for us to advise.

Might take some of breaker,wall switch(s),wire and other devices on same circuit if you plan having someone walk you through troubleshooting problem.
