Whenever we go to a department or big box store the DW always says, I guess you'll be in the garden center, how long will you be?. I seldom buy their plants but always look.

Didn't drive me crazy - I actually appreciate any interest at all - but my neighbor asked me how many different ones I had, "Like 20 or 30?" (She knows a lot more than the average person). Nope like 200 (I lied a little. I'm not counting seedlings and any that are new this year). And I know all their names. We had a nice little tour (way too short for me) and she tested me on a couple of them. She actually has a bunch of Hosta, but only 4 different ones. She's lived there quite a bit longer than me. She does recognize all the weeds/volunteers, so it's good to put a name to them when still small. Why does columbine reseed so well, but the bleeding hearts do not. Should I let those wild grapes grow or rip it out now.

Here's one I heard yesterday, "I like your flowers" - I have one Iris in bloom. What about ALL OF MY HOSTA!!!

one neighbor (moved..our wooded neighborhood was not her cup of tea) said "why does everybody have so many of those?" (pointing to a hosta).."I have a lot too" (not really)..I tried to explain all of the good reasons to grow hosta but it was falling on deaf ears..she would be happier with grass and one tree..that's her choice but I'm happier here with "so many of those"..

Had a sister visiting and she pointed to one particular hosta and said, I have one of those. I asked her what variety it was and she just said she didn't have any idea but it looked a lot like it.

Steve were you asking, " Why does columbine reseed so well, but the bleeding hearts do not" or your neighbor? I have the opposite here. my bleeding hearts reseed like crazy but columbine hardly at all.

"Hosta?! Those things are boring". Wait...that's what I used to say a few decades ago.

"I don't know how you could have a hosta die. Mine were given to me, I don't do a thing and they grow like crazy. What could you be doing to them?"

"I prefer plants with color". Today I heard the best response to this ever "Green is a color!" (--quote from Hortube with Jim Putnam). Amen Jim, amen!

I also hear, "I like plants with flowers". Argument invalid. Hostas have flowers too.

I was asking. I haven't seen any gardens planted with Columbine in the area, but we keep getting new volunteers every year. I let some bloom the 1st year here, but none the last two. I like my neighbors bleeding hearts and they seem to grow well under her maples, so I was thinking of getting some. Would be much more convenient to have some volunteer for me. The leaves seem similar, but I haven't really looked that closely at the BH.

Awww, Steve, you pull up the columbines? I let any volunteers bloom and when done, move them back to the main clump.

Hmmm, my BH don't self seed. Darn.

BH re not near the hostas, are big enough now to take a cutting and add to a hosta bed and see if the hostas will accept a BH. :) They have never attacked the astilbes.

steve, I hope you pulled the wild grape. If it's the same weed I have, it's so aggressive it had me looking up kudzu. Glad it wasn't that!

Back to the things people say... A neighbor walking by showed interest in the hostas so came in closer to look at some. When she saw the plant markers, she gave me a look like she thought she stumbled onto a real kook. She said how cute it was that I gave my plants names and asked if they're named after people I know. Honest mistake? There was Ann Kulpa and Frances Williams .............but Wolverine. Really?

And as well , I get......lets go over Sandra's and get free plants. There are ugly, but It fills that empty space until we can decide on what to really plant there.
