Repurpose or move on?

Hello Houzz community

i have a design dilemma and need your help. i have a huge mahagony heavy and dark entertainment center from a decade ago. It is in great condition but no longer relevant to my decor style. It now sits in the garage and I am unable to sell it on craigslist etc for even couple of hundred of dollars. My master bedroom could use that dimension of furniture but my master has a mid century theme going. Question Is do I salvage this piece by painting it a light gray or off white ( simply white walls in bedroom with walnut bedroom set). Or just let it go and not water another moment of life on it? Pls chime in- thanks !

    I vote for let it go! it sounds like it's not a good companion piece any more.

      Painting a piece can totally give it new life but it would still have to fit into the space. If you think it would fit then my vote is paint (I love to resurrect things like this) but if it doesn’t fit then I would donate. Or consign.

      4 pieces - 2 piers, console and a hutch. I am thinking of going offwhite paint with wood shelves (replace glass) , take away the ornate doors and make it open shelves with a console in middle and do away the hutch. But again its >$200 for repurposing not to mention the time and bandwidth. Hence my dilemma is it really worth it?

      I'd spend the money on new items unless you really love the current pieces and really want to put a lot of work into sanding and repainting. I have simiar pieces and will end up getting rid of them in the near future or as soon as I can find a smaller replacement that I like.

      Thanks Molly and others. we love to travel so I am thinking of a gallery wall with our favorite travel destinations instead of furniture for sake of filling empty space. So I am going to go with the pics that put a smile on our face each morning

      While the pieces look nice, I don't see the working well with MCM style. Not sure how painting them white or gray will make them work better with MCM. You said you were "unable to sell it on craigslist etc for even couple of hundred of dollars". Maybe it depends on your area, but a couple hundred dollars is a lot more than I would expect anyone to pay for them in my area. I think you just need to accept that you don't have a space for them and sell them for what anyone will pay which means reducing the price until someone bites. Or donate them. They aren't doing anyone any good in the garage.

      I agree with the above...I don't think they will make you happy in your MCM bedroom...even if you paint them the same as the walls so they disappear...


      I would gift those lovely and substantial pieces to someone with a traditional house and feel darn good about doing so :)

      Too bad you can't cut off the top part and use the two - two drawer units. If you want to use one of these units and paint it, I think you could but would have to have the right place for it. I guess I would donate - sell - give away rather than be concerned about it.
