If you plant the half sweetpotato, you will get a clump of vines, but not likely a good production of quality potatoes IMO.

Oh. They are so cute. Wayne_5, Are we supposed to plant whole sweet potatoes? Has anyone tried planting purple yams here? Do they do ok?

I started off in life almost 20° lower in latitude and near sea level. After beginning as a gardener, I moved near the Canadian and US border years ago. 95% of my gardening experience has been on glacial till.

DW grew up gardening even further south and Dad was from southern New Mexico. Both were humored by my efforts to grow sweet potatoes - most recently, those of a purple variety. Scrawny things, down in the dirt.

Steve, I've grown them before with moderate success. This year they're going to be in a sunnier area and inside a tunnel to start off. The soil is getting plenty warm right now.

I recently started a sweet potato plant from one that I'd overlooked in the pantry. After a week in some potting soil, it's starting to put up leaves and roots. If the weather holds out, I think I'll put it out in a pot on the warm front porch in a couple more weeks. I've never ever had sweet potato success in the ground here in NoCo, but perhaps a container is the way to go, at least for a decorative vine.
