How does that help with the placement. IMO you do not make it prettier but try to make it disappear. I have no clue why it is so large that is why I asked what it’s purpose is.

It doesn't help at all with the placement, @Patricia, but that would likely entail some expensive remodeling to move it. So, yeah, make it pretty if you can't move it.

looks like a return vent - important for air circulation and hvac efficiency -- I would rarely recommend a bookshelf but in this situation a super slender (12") bookshelf with an open back may work- place limited items in the area where the vent is. Consider hiring someone to build a custom one to get it just right curate with care

@ittybitty1, I've had the pleasure of meeting Annie Kantor, the woman behind AJK Designs, and she has found a niche that really resonates with designers and homeowners alike. She'll do custom designs, too. Anyway, they are beautiful to look at and beautifully made. Great solution for covering up ugly old radiators, too.

The thermostat is on the same wall. Is it more than just a return air vent? The whole panel has screws for removal and access to what else? The what else will determine if you can put a slim open back bookcase in front to disguise it or if you will need to make it pretty using the suggestions already offered. Good luck.

The OP needs to learn how to use a forum like this and what is expected of her. She's asking for free help and needs to put forth the effort to make it easy for people to help her. She--and many others--are treating this like Facebook, and it ain't.

My guess is there is a heater behind that panel. We had a similar issue. The intake vent was in our front entryway. The heat exchanger was in a hallway closet directly behind the vent. When we needed to have a new HVAC installed, we had the heat exchanger moved up in the attic and the intake vent is now in the hallway ceiling. We gained a new closet in the hallway.

Sorry for the people who got angry for me not responding quickly enough. Also sorry Patricia and Tatts that you think I have been posting like FB. I do not need your negativity and please do not respond. I have been out and just got back in. I haven't moved in yet. I believe the air filter is behind that. It is a rental so I can't do much to it.

Penny, I think the book shelf idea is great, especially if you can put a nice airy type fern plant right in front of the vent part. The other option is a narrow entry table, with the grate underneath and a plant in front. With a large mirror resting on top. I think that may work nice. Two small lamps on the table and a family photo or?

Thank you Sandra Probably go with the book shelf idea. Pretty high up on the wall so don't know if a table would work. Really stupid place for that thing but what can I do. Just have to work around it. I have an old Japanese screen with 4 panels, might lean them on that wall with enough space to not cover the venting (slack). They are not connected anymore, the screws fell out.
