White over blue paint

Sons room had bright blue walls. He wanted white and we chose BM Chantilly Lace. Was going to do it myself, bought primer as suggested by the paint store and the paint. Decided to hire a painter because I had other rooms to do as well. They did not use the Primer and painted 3 coats. It looks very blue to me. Not sure if they need to come back or wondering if it reads blue because of Northern Exposure? Painter saying 3 coats is enough. Thanks for input

A primer should have been used but 3 coats IMO should have covered the blue it is possible there is something in the room casting a blue tinge, maybe post a pic of the space . There is always a chance with N. exposure that colors can have a blue undertone.

After three coats, I doubt it's the original blue showing through. BM Chantilly Lace has blue undertones and it will play off elements in the room such as furniture, carpet, light bulbs, natural light...

Excuse the teenage boy mess. Work in progress lol. Also for some reason I think we used linen white on ceiling trim but windows and door trim are dove white

The trim was not repainted. Plan to go over it with Chantilly lace pearl? Maybe that will help?

Flo- Thanks for that info. Any suggestions on how she can neutralize the blue?

he wants a very clean modern look. I’m thinking a black headboard with white textured rug? Color is just not my thing

I don’t have time right now, but after appointment I have I will do a color analysis for you to see what might help you with this room.

Sorry I am so delayed in getting back to you. Houzz has been messed up, again, and I couldn't find your thread! But I have done the analysis and found that BM Chantilly Lace has a Chroma of .27 and an LRV of 90 which means there is almost no color and the Light Reflectiveness of this color is very high 100 being the highest, hence you get a bright white perception. So, I looked around for some ideas that wouldn't require repainting. With this color, you can add other colors in the room that will help tone it down and create a great look. Here are some "inspiration" photos. Not sure your son's age?? Or his interests. Does he have a favorite color or hobby? Just incorporate some of his desires.

I probably wouldn't do a black headboard. High contrast will make the walls look even more stark.

Thank you flo for this information! He’s 17 and wants a very modern black and white look. I’m thinking I’ll have repaint then? These suggestions are wonderful. Maybe he’ll change his mind

For modern design, keep things streamlined and interestng without clutter of any kind. Less is more in a modern or contemporary look.

If he is teenager, try to make sure you are aiming to the future when he will be leaving for any post high school learning and you might want to convert the room to "guest room". Then if you want to "warm it up" you can simply add texture and some warm colors like carmel. This is a small living room in the photo below, but it shows how adding carmel, black and some texture really change the feeling of the room. Same applies to a guest room. A murphy bed might be a great idea too and a real space saver. You can create an almost apartment feeling in this room.

I would add a deep gray in bedding, etc., instead of black because it will still give the modern look, but be more flexible down the road. But then of course, if you do decide to paint, BM OC - 177 Simply White has a touch more Chroma at .50 but still bright white with an LRV of 90 but just a bit more "color" which in this case means adding a touch of black to the white base to tone the base white just a bit. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. At 17, he won't be home long!

Oh I love these ideas! Thank you so much for all of the tips. I think the deep gray is the way to go. We'll try it out and if it's still looking blue we will give the simply white another look! It was one of the contenders as we narrowed down the field. Thank you so much Flo!!!

You are so welcome. I hope you hit on the perfect combination. Whites are the hardest and light conditions are critical to those tones. Don't beat yourself up, it is hard!

Thank you all again. Quick update we decided on Super White. (Was close between that and Decorator White but Super White came thru very neutral. Will post pics when done!
