Climbing roses grow to many DIFFERENT sizes, depending on WHERE they area grown. Some roses which are not even climbers in one climate will turn out to climb high in a different climate. In my experience, some of them get WAY taller than they are "said" to in sources if you garden in a warm climate. My best advice is to get particular advice on how specific roses act only from people who grow roses very close to where you live - locate the nearest rose society and ask them.

Thanks Jackie, will try to get some local input. I can understand that a rose that is classified as a climber may not achieve the height in a colder zone, but since I am in a warm zone, assumed that something usually called a climber would climb for me. Did not realize it could be all over the place. Thanks for your response, its it's very helpful.

Jackie's right. I don't know 'Nahema' or grow the other two, but in a warm climate where there's plenty of rain--Houston!--roses generally classified as shrubs can, given support, grow to staggering sizes. Good luck!

It's not the size . . . But I just thought I'd mention that MIP (and to a lesser extent MEC) was the ONLY rose I ever remember adding overwhelming blackspot to its continual powdery mildew and cyclical rust. And that was back around 1989-1990 ... when we were spraying EVERY week with rotating fungicides, as well as pesticides.

Yes. They grew really large here in Coastal SoCal -- and could have been climbers -- but with that much fungal disease . . .

I did, however, get one lovely bloom on 'Mme. Ernst Calvat' that sported almost-completely back to MIP. That was cool!

All that aside, though, in your climate, why have you not considered one of the lovely, fragrant white or yellow Noisettes? They're sure easier roses to work with!

I will look into the Noisettes. I was trying to find something strongly fragrant, with an old rose scent, which is what led me down the path of the current roses I am looking at. Will research more, thank you!
