I don't. I suppose it's bad to punish the dog for the owner's lack of responsibility, but you have to train the dog someway. A motion sprinkler would be a perfect training device. If they get squirted a couple of times, they'll go somewhere else to place their mark.

I have a new dog who likes to pull Kleenex out of the trash can and chew it up (usually the bathroom). We told him no several times, but it didn't seem to matter. We put a mouse trap in each of the trash cans he kept raiding. Once he sets one off, he's learned that is not the place to play. Sometimes it takes two, but he's a fast learner. He's not hurt, but the motion and sound deter him. I once had a little dog that would not leave the pillows on the sofa alone. We put mouse traps on the edge of the sofa to deter her. Eventually, we didn't even have to set them. Them just being there was a deterrent.

I love dogs, but they have to learn boundaries or they are not enjoyable pets or neighbors.

It's my experience they go for the corner plants. My long passed German Shepherd "anointed" my hosta that way. Once I figured that out, I put the big pots and upright plants on the corners (I only grow in pots), that way he anointed the pot and not the hosta.

Hopefully, you can extrapolate that to your situation to your advantage.

I do have four small dogs, I understand the pain here. I had to replace a daylily with a big rock, solved the problem. Bkay made me feel better about my suggestion, go for it.

Thanks for the suggestions. They aren't mean dogs so I have tried to be friendly to them, don't know who their owners are. We back up to a subdivision but we are on a gravel road in an old cotton field/cow pasture. I just looked at the cost of the scarecrow water sprayer and electric fencing. Expensive! We chased both dogs out of the yard yesterday. I have put sections of decorative fence around the corner/solitary plants and they started using the ones deeper in the beds. I was thinking of buying some heavy duty string that is hard to see and running it 2 feet up to see if getting tangled in that would discourage them--I will just have to try not to trip myself up. I have mixed shrubs along the edge of the property that the string could be hidden in.

Between the dogs and the squirrels I am having pest issues.
