Your hostas are growing so well under the "pretty big trees!" What kind of trees are they? Mine don't grow nearly that well under my maple trees.

I'd love to show the gardens, but can't get DH on board.

I usually can not fig and it takes DH about 15 or more per hole.

We have a dozen kind of trees. This island is cottonwood, cherry,maple.

Trees about 120' tall and can get my arms about half way around.

Trees like maple that have 'hairy roots smother the roots of hosta; usually (My Elegans thrives under one), shallow roots (like pine) don't seem to pose a problem. Not in my yard anyway.
