Help! Do I have room for a kitchen table??

last modified: 6 years ago

I have 10 feet between kitchen island and back of sofa. I could probably push the sofa another foot. I’m sick of eating at the island and the dining room table feels far away and out of the main area. Could I fit a small table here? Or try a sofa table with chairs? I’d much prefer a little table solution.

A photo or floor plan would be helpful.

Hi. Yes. You can put a table there. You have 120" of width. I'd buy a 30" wide table. That would leave you 45" on both sides to navigate.

As far al the length of the table, I'd need more information on the measurement of the other direction.

I would like to see the sectional moved forward if possible. Would need photos of the family room.

Is there a chandelier over the "dining" area?

    Thanks.

No chandelier. Here are a bunch of angles! Thank you!

Option 1) Get a small kitchen table around 30" that does not obstruct the walkways. I am sure this is a major corridor in your home. Make sure that the chairs can scoot under the table when they are not in use.

Option 2) Get a sofa table with stools.

Would like to see more photos of the family room. If you could move that sectional forward, it would help.

    Thanks, Alicia. Nice home!

Hooker Furniture does a line of "Friendship" tables that will fit in that space, and they are unique in that they come with spacers so you can make it either a standard height table or a counter height one. 32" wide and they come with leaves to expand. These are hot sellers right now and there are several different models on their website, here's one.

I wanted to mention a 3rd option: the sectional is huge and gobbling up a lot of space. But, this might work

-move the tv toward the fireplace (keeping it on the same wall)

-move the sectional down toward the fireplace (chair by left side of fireplace would have to go elsewhere)

-place a long table on the hall side of sectional......might have to butt it up to sectional, losing one side of seating.

This is the issue with these huge sectionals. They just take up so much space. But, design involves compromise sometimes. Would you be willing to break up the sectional and/or replace it with a sofa?

You didn't give any other dimensions of the space, so I gave the back of the sofa 8'

This table is 60" round, giving you plenty of room to pull back the chairs.

Thank you CDR Design for all your tips! When my husband gets home I will have him help me move the couch a foot closer to tv. I don’t think we will rearrange everything, though I do have some issues on how to decorate the massive wall above the Tv. I kind of wish I just put the tv on the mantel. Oh well lots of good ideas here thanks!

Judy the back of the couch is 10 feet. And I have about 14.5 feet from the slider doors to the stair banister.

No need to decorate that wall. Best to leave it simple. I would recommend, especially if yu move the tv over, a tall, airy plant or tree that balances out the fireplace somewhat.

If you had hung the tv over the fireplace, for the average person, it would have been too high.

The issue is the walkways. You are used to that nice open space. I like to have 4 feet for a high-usage walkway area.

If you buy any table, place a mockup in the area first to see how you like the functioning.

    Hi Alicia,

    Off point.

But need to tell you how much I love your uncluttered, unfussy, breezy and clean home, especially since you clearly have small children.

It feels like putting a table in the designated space is going to disrupt a natural pathway, also feels like you will constantly be pushing chairs in in order to have an organized space.

    Myself personally?

I'd put a small round table in the beautiful window corner, next to the tv where the white chair currently is located and try that for a few weeks. Something comfy, low to the ground and with cushions.

I brought An old patio set inside to get an idea. This is 42 inches. It doesn’t feel too cramped, but I don’t have it centered. There is less room closer to the couch but you can certainly still walk through.

I too wonder about filling that space with a table and chairs I love that nice open walkway. I would not move the sofa forward since it is just sitting inside its own space now in fact it could go back to line up with the wall that juts out. As for a table how many people need to sit there maybe just a nice sofa table and some backless stools might work . I would need some more info and I do not like the table not centered in the space at all.

So glad you brought in a table to see how you like it!

As I mentioned, if you want to place a table here, it should be a 30 inch and as Patricia mentioned, needs to be centered on the doorway. One issue with a 30 inch table, though, is that everything else is so large scale: large sectional, 2-story ceiling, etc. I really like that huge, open passageway that draws one right to the outside. Both visually and functionally, I'd like to see that area remain open, if at all possible.

You'll see, once centered on the doorway, that it would have to be a 30"

I would consider the other options I mentioned also. Each one has its positives and negatives.

The issue with moving the sectional to line up with the wall is that it is a hike to get to the sectional. That's the drawback of a giant piece like this. One the other hand, you may love that sectional.

That is why I recommend trying to move the sectional closer to the fireplace and closer to the tv wall. Would need more photos of the family room.

My main problem is entertaining. It’s awkward to have people lined up sitting side by side at
The island all the time. And a sofa table just puts more people side by side. Maybe a smaller table centered with slim chairs that fit completely underneath. Also, as my daughter Gets older I’d like her to be able to have a little table to sit at instead of always being counter height.

My dining room is only 9.75'x 10'. So I would say you have plenty of room!

When I was in a small apartment I used a vintage card table that was smaller than any standard dining table with a top that would flip vertically to be out of the way when not in use.

Here is just one example of one that might work. I'ts 51 x 31 and extendable. I'd do a mockup of something like this and move the sectional forward.

It would have to be centered on the sliding door to look good.

Well, Alicia, still not centered. Sorry. Can you move it to the left a little? Thanks!

Could you please move the sectional forward towards the tv? I'd like to see the coffee table centered on the fireplace.

Then, move the chairs so that they are are on either side of the tv.

Let's see how that feels to you.

I love the open space and uncluttered vista to the pretty back yard. Do you have a dining room?

CDR I moved one chair to other side of tv and it is too close to couch. Barely room to get by and that’s before moving the couch closer to Tv. The coffee table is just junk anyway - ice been searching for something new. I believe this is centered now!

Tfitz I do have a dining room behind where I am standing to take pics of slider. It’s just closed off and not ideal for entertaining unless I’m doing a sit down dinner

Okay. Thanks. What about either removing s section of sectional or moving chair on left side of fireplace out of room. Can you try that? A long term solution would be to remove s wall of the existing dining room if that is possible. Thanks for your perseverance.

Perfect size and solution I think. Being able to comfortably walk around the whole thing is the answer. it doesn't stop the flow when 2 people are going opposite directions, each can go around. You have a beautiful house.

I really think a slim rectangular table would suit the space better. Something like this?

How about putting a rectangular table right up against the sofa back. If you search kitchen table behind sofa there are some nice looking options that may allow you to keep the space closer to the kitchen open. You could even treat the back of the sofa like a banquette with a bench and pillows...

Thank you everyone for the great tips. I think I’ll just have to try out the different options until I find what works best.
