Dorm room logistics - Internship

DD# 1 arrived at a NYU dorm (Greenwich Hall) yesterday, for her summer internship with a bank in Manhattan, and was horrified to find she was placed with her roommate in what's effectively a single room, with bunk beds. She has access to 3 drawers. She will address the situation with the dorm but in case she does not have options, do you have recommendations on how to improvise on storing things in a tiny space? I have requested dimensions and pictures and will post. The good news is that she loves her roommate.

Sounds like a typical dorm room. Are there bunks or loft beds. If loft use the storage underneath. If bunks you can use over the door storage at the foot of the top bunk (should be room for each to hang a storage unit).

Thanks Satine. As a rising senior, this is new to her (regarding typical dorm room). I do not know what a 'storage unit' is and a quick search did not bring anything up. May I impose on you to post a link?

No help, but I did hear that NYU dorms are quite tiny. I guess she can be glad she didn't need to bring bulky, winter clothes!

There are inexpensive stackable Rubbermaid storage drawers you can purchase for additional storage. Those could go in the closet if there is room there. Sounds pretty tight. If they are allowed to put anything on the wall, Command hooks for hanging most anything else like rain jackets, hats, keys, etc.

Oldbat, the units I had in mind are the ones you normally hang in a closet. Some are made to hold shoes but can be used for cosmetics, or socks, brushes, schools supplies etc. Some have wider shelves and can be used to hold folded clothing. Sorry don't know how to post a picture.

My sons dorm room also had only one dresser. They too got three drawers each. A great solution was the hanging soft storage bags in the closet. Kind of like the shoe bag but with stacking shelves.

Bpath, thank you for that website. My son is moving in this fall and so many things are now being checked off the list!

Thank you all very much for the input and suggestions. I am forwarding them on to her. First day today at work; and yes, she needs to dress professionally, so lots of shoes, clothes and accessories. (Full disclosure, she over-packed and brought too much stuff). I'm sure she's focused on getting a different room vs. unpacking, and there's the Bruins' game tonight... so it may be a while before I hear back from her.

Welcome to the cramped world of NYC dorms. DD graduated from a NYC university and lived in 6 different dorm rooms during her 4 years. It was always an interesting experience in utilizing space.

One year the girls un-bunked the beds which reduced floor space but gave them the opportunity to put the beds on risers and then use the underbed space for storage. She also used stacking dorm cubes on wheels that could easily be pushed into a corner and hung all manner of things off the beds too.

I had a friend whose daughter "stored" half her clothes at the drycleaners', LOL.

It’s not just NYC dorm rooms. I recently visited the University of Delaware dorm rooms. They appeared to be no bigger than 10x10, divided into a small anteroom with 2 desks and a clothes rack and then the bedroom area with the two beds separated and raised; storage chests underneath. If the person in each bed extended their arms they could hold hands. It was a shock as to how tight the room was.

We had taken our nephew to the dorm in U of Pennsylvania quite a few years ago (actually many) and I remember that room was much larger with more space between the beds.

Send her. Large bottle of Downey wrinkle release spray. It will be her best friend!

Most dorm rooms are a SHOCK . I think that is why colleges do sleep over orientations and tours. She will adjust and manage--they all do.
