Larix decidua 'Pendula'

I planted one of these today and would appreciate hearing from those who have experience with it. I know it has to be staked to gain verticality (I used to be a basketball official), but will it gain some height -- very slowly -- if not staked? It's about 4' from the house and 10' to the eaves. I'd like to remove the nursery-installed stake, but will hold off until I learn a bit more about its habits.

    From the ACS Database:

" This plant can take on a multitude of forms depending on how it is trained and staked. Terminal branches will push up to 12 inches (30 cm) each year, creating with time, an imposing specimen in the landscape. "

    And:

" GROWTH SHAPE: Mounding, Arching or Weeping
    GROWTH SIZE: Intermediate: 6 to 12 inches (15 – 30 cm) per year / 5 to 10 feet (1.5 – 3 m) after 10 years "

I have no personal experience with this species.

Plant usually sold under the name is a Japanese larch cultivar, with pinkish shoots, bluish leaves and reflexed cone scales. Typical habit seems to be a weeping pyramid.

This is an old cultivar that I assumed was commonly grown. My intent was simply to pick the minds of others who have experience with it. I am a bit concerned it's too close to the house, but I am willing to clear some space as it expands. Anyhow, this is what it looks like today.

i dont think the trunk is thick enough to maintain veticality .. so i would leave it a few more years .... i might retie with thick jute or rope.. so you can untie and retie at will ... that green plastic can strangle it.. in tree time ...

i dont think you need to worry about space ... when it gets as high as you want ... just stop training it taller.. it will weep down ...

i grew mine to the limit of how high i could stake it ... lol ... sooner or later.. there are limits ...

perhaps its a MI thing... as to size ...

i recall embo comments on which larix is actually sold in the trade ... i think he decided mine were actually kaempheri ... whatever.. lol ...

in the pic below.. the further eventually died.. i dont recall why ... the closer is now about a 4 footer ...

Ken, thank you for sharing a pic. When you say it is a “4 footer,” is that because you removed the stake and it lost elevation as it sprawled, or is there a more calamitous explanation? Also, was it your experience it stayed narrow as long as it was staked?

Dean, what did yours in? Does it remind you of Sargent Hemlock in habit and growth rate when left unstaked?

Maackia , I did an image search , and looks like it only stays narrow when young
