Luggage recommendations????

last modified: 6 years ago

DH and I have been shopping around for soft sided, carry on luggage for a gift for our DS and his new wife. I did search here on the conversations side for any past threads on this topic and have looked at some of the brands suggested. At the luggage store we visited yesterday, we looked at a variety of brands including the high end, Briggs & Riley. Altho I might be willing to spend that much, DH is not on board. One of the features I really like with the Briggs & Riley is the handle on the outside, leaving a completely flat interior for packing. Does anyone else have this feature? We are looking for something durable with maximum packing space with preferably, a price under $300. Any recommendations??? Oh, one more question - spinner vs. 2 wheels - which do you prefer?

    .

    Eagle Creek

For carry-on, having exterior hardware to get a flat interior you lose space - not worth it (also have Briggs luggage, prefer my Eagle Creek).

I have replaced almost all of my luggage with Briggs & Riley pieces. They wear so well, and the features are really thought out. I prefer two wheels to spinners for carry on, but my favorite piece has no wheels at all.

While traveling last year I stopped in a luggage store and chatted with the manager. She recommended Briggs & Riley and said that it was the preferred bag of pilots and stewards.

I'm looking to buy new luggage before my trip at the end of June so I'll be checking this thread too. Can't decide on the optimum size

We used to travel a lot for work. DH has Tumi bags and I have B&R. I much prefer the flat bottom with hardware on the outside vs the Tumi that has the lumpy bottom. This thread reminds me I need to take one of my B&R bags in for repair - now that I have all kinds of time for this kind of errand post-retirement.

If I were buying a new bag I think I’d like a spinner - less stress on the shoulder when dragging a heavier bag. I check my bag though and when I look at those wheels sticking out I always wonder how long they’d last with the baggage handling gorillas. The non-spinners are recessed and protected a bit more.

I am a huge B&R fan as well. I desperately wanted more stylish luggage a year or two ago, but found B&R's layout best.

My children have had Victorinox luggage over the years and that has worn very well too.

PS I researched luggage at Flyer Talk in the past https://www.flyertalk.com.

I always bought Briggs & Riley through the years, but about five years ago, I found a Lucas spinner roll-aboard with a coordinating carry on satchel at TJMaxx. I love that set. It was significantly cheaper than the B&R, but has held up quite well. I never check luggage, though. I don't worry too much about breakage because the spinner was inexpensive enough that I can replace it easily a few times before approaching the B&R price.

The Away carry-on with pocket spinner is getting some good reviews, too.

We also like the Swiss Gear/Victorinox/Wenger bags, if you opt not to spend as much as the B&R.

I would love to own a Briggs & Riley piece for myself and may someday treat myself, but in the meantime, DH and I finally decided (we've been looking around for a couple of weeks) for the "kids", the Eagle Creek Tarmac with 2 wheels should work well for them. I own a carry on from Eagle Creek that has traveled to Europe 5 times and numerous times around the US and is holding up very well. Thank you for all the suggestions!!

I adore my luggage, but it is not practical at all. Everyone -- bellmen, drivers, gate agents, always comments on them.

Because we travel so much, I really care about my bags. To me it is like an extension of my handbag. It has to "spark joy."

I just got DD a Ted Baker bag that is very pretty.

My other DD is sooo crazy whe wants to take my vintage alligator/croc ? IDK on vacation .... no wheels at all of course.

I have a Lucas bag for my carry on. I love that it is so light weight. It’s expandable and has outside pockets so you can cram a fair amount in there. It’s a spinner.

Spinner vs wheels depends on where you’ll be using it. Spinners don’t do well on uneven terrain (brick and stone). If all your trips depend on valets, not an issue.

We decided to go with the 2 wheels for what Delilah66 mentioned - uneven terrain. Spinners are great in the airport, but on cobblestone, I think the 2 wheels will be better.
