Yes, take it down if you don't like it. Cornices are still used in more formal window treatments.

It makes the window look shorter. I like a taller looking window in an attic room, which this looks to be. So, if you like tall windows, take it down.

I would take it down. It's mounted weirdly too, on the side trim and below the top trim.

What happened to the Roman shades idea? :( That cornice/ valance really, had to go but as a rule one hangs them high enough to cover the trim but not any of the glass making the window look taller.

Thank you guys. So happy we took it down so thank you for suggesting. Did Roman shades in kitchen but thought we’d go with plain old blinds in the rest of house. We have a lot of windows so kept it easy. They are not duette, I believe faux wood (pvc?).
