Is it possible it is a mutation? I've seen it happen to corn on rare occasions, the plant does not usually survive due to lack of chlorophyll. Of course this one looks beautifully healthy - but I can't imagine where it is getting its energy. I'm looking forward to the answers others come up with on this one.

Albinism in plants is rare but it does happen occasionally. However, the lack of chlorophyll (any sign of green or other pigmentation) negates the ability to photosynthesize so pure white or albino plants generally are very short lived. Unless they are parasitic, which is a possibility......I am not aware of any parastic plants that look like this however.

It appears to have a yellow bloom so Senecio niveoaureus looks like a winner imo.

That is the same species in my link above. However the OP claims the leaves are

" smooth". Does that mean not fuzzy or having hairs?

Since that plant is native to Equador, it seems a very likely candidate. But not exactly pure white/albino. Foliage is really a very pale silvery gray so there is some chlorophyll involved. And it seems it prefers open, full sun locations at higher elevations to maximize photosynthesis.

Yes, Carol, I was referring back to your initial suggestion. Sorry if I didn't make it clear that I was backing you up. From the images I've looked at the colour comes from the fine white smooth hairs which are presumably protective since it grows at high elevation in a dry atmosphere.
