Hostanity - Orders coming in (the country)

I've been really busy lately getting some new orders in the ground. Apparently, too busy for pictures. Had one come in last Thursday and one on Friday. In the Country arrived Monday (just a small order) and while the newest ones were small (as expected) they still had good root systems and Peek-a-boo Purple really struck me as being different (lower left). Both Kanzi (upper left) and Valley's Ruffle Shuffle had many eyes. Guess I'm glad I waited a year on those two.

My hosta insanity is really noticeable this year. Moved to Ohio late summer 2015. Bought 6 Hosta. 2016: Bought 60 plants and made one hosta bed plus some scattered plantings, visited 4 Hosta Nurseries, 1 mail order.

2017: Bought 40 plants and added 2 Hosta beds (1 small), visited 1 Hosta Nursery, 2 mail orders.

2018: 120 new plants, 1 new Hosta bed, expanded the 2nd bed, 2 Hosta Nurseries, 5 mail orders, Joined the Hosta society and bought plants at auction (twice).

2019: 110 new plants (so far), 3 new Hosta beds, 3 Hosta Nurseries, 8 mail orders, no time for the Hosta society, but I'm going to the Tailg8 (and auction).

My body is sore, my wife calls herself the Hosta widow, and I am seriously gonna run out of room when these grow up. I may be in need of an intervention. On the plus side, I've lost some weight.

Wow! I'm going to save your post here so when the DW starts to complain about my purchases, i can whip this out and tell her, well at least i'm not that bad! lol

Nice selection! I really like the Kanzi and Valley's Ruffle Shuffle. I also enjoyed your timeline...lol, that was me a few years ago but I have since run out of room and they are all getting big and some need to be moved. I'm trying to figure out where I could add or expand beds. I haven't bought any hosta since 2017 but I find myself itching to buy more! The last 2 years I have been focusing on more sun-loving perennials for the front yard since I don't have much shade out there.

Some real stunners there, Steve. I liked the timeline, too. I think by next year you could be a Hosta Society. Sorry about the sore back.

I feel your pain, Steve. I'm only (only?) up to 107 cultivars now, but so many are still in pots and I can't seem to find enough time to get things planted. I'm thinking next year I'll take a break from buying any new plants - of any kind - and just let things grow... and enjoy them. I, too, am going to run out of space and DH doesn't want to give up any more grass.

When I get a little more time, I'll try to post some pictures. A lot of my hostas have leaped this year, and some are bigger than anticipated (yikes!). I also have some other sun-loving perennials that have really come into their own, so they will probably need dividing before long (daylilies and daisies especially). I wanted lush and full, but....

LOL, I was feeling good about myself at the hosta club sale, when one member spent over $400, another over $300... and that was after the 25% member discount. I only spent about $90 that day.

Might be the new math, but that's 330 Hostas added in less than 4 years. But there's (almost) always someone better (or worse) off than you are.

Hi miles10612, DH & I will be at the NCHS Tailgate at Bay Village too. Are you a member of NC? I maintain their website. Steve and I and spouses managed to meet up at the dinner and tour some gardens of the 2018 Tailgate in Columbus. Great event.

At some point you will discover you like some better than others. Then you can cull out the so-so ones and add a new one or two.

Steve... Glad to see I am not the only one that went hog wild for purchase in 3 or 4 yrs . I have been behaving myself remarkably the past two years as I really don't want to take out any more lawns . Doubt if my back will take it any more either. Now they grew gigantic and wondering what to do now. Guess I will have to divide and sell some. . Bev are there really some that are so so ? I find those my challenge hosta. What a score you got again

Been there, done that, so this lesser addiction is more than tolerated.

Nice to know there is hope of slowing down. This year really shocked me with the amount of work involved. I'm pretty sure I can quit whenever I want.

My husband and I will be there at the tailgate at the Northeast Ohio Daylily tent selling daylilies--we are members of both the hosta and daylily groups--we will have on blue short sleeve shirts--the hosta group will be wearing green. The hosta group asked our group to sell daylilies---most of the daylily group lives far east so we are in charge of this sale. Note: Lake Road is closed just east of Cahoon Road. If you taking I-90 do not get off at the Columbia Road exit and go north to Lake Road you cannot get through. Instead get off at Crocker Bassett and head north to Lake Road, turn right on Lake and head east to Cahoon Park which is on the south side of Lake Road. If you are coming up I-71, get off at I-480 head west until you get to the Stearns Road exit, turn right on Stearns and head north. Stearns becomes Crocker-Bassett just north of Center Ridge Road. Continue north to Lake Road, turn right and turn right at Cahoon. Hope this helps. See you next Friday!

@miles10612 How nice is that, to be a daylily vendor at a hosta Tailgate. Close to heaven. Oh, thank you very much for notice on the road closed and very clear detour. We never get up that way to know the streets. I will compare that to the route we mapped out. It will be fun to meet you. I am excited about this event. I love seeing the beautiful gardens and meeting other hosta addicts. So many talented and interesting people.
